I was with you until the DLC disaster.
I really grew to like the combat and the memes that are spouted about it are mostly wrong. Not only do you have several ways to dodge(phasing, roll, quicksteps) but having your attacks change per directional input was genius because the general combat flow is amazing in this game with attacks being switched up seamlessly, as well as switching weapons for combos on the fly and parter attacks. The "just press circle" meme is also stale because there are several types of enemies you literally cannot hit by just doing the standard attack without doing anything else. That meme only goes for most basic enemies and a handful of badly designed encounters.
That being said, after I learned that they scrapped half their new DLC plans this game can go fuck itself. There are plenty of problems with this game and I'm not spending my time with an unfinished mess, simply because I like certain aspects of it.

I really wish I didn't wait til near the end to unlock character swapping when you had to take control of the other party members. Playing as Prompto was pretty fun and didn't realize each one plays differently. Only wish you could stay as them outside of combat rather than continuously switching to them when combat starts.

I'm actually really bad at the combat. How do use all those dodging moves effectively when encountering groups of enemies? I always seem to get gang-raped, and have to resort to either magic or Prompto's bazooka.
And which enemies do you NEED to switch attack direction? I always switch it up because it's fun. How can you tell?
Have you tried switching to using R2 for attack? Feels a lot nicer.

I don't think Ardyn is a great villain. A great villain plays off the protagonist and pushes him toward development as a character by being so evil. Ardyn instead roadblocks development of Noctis as a character in four major occurences throughout the game, i can name four off the top of my head. He takes the narrative, tries to become the protagonist of the story because he was badly written or used as a plot device to cut on dev cost rather than being made a correct villain. I was utterly unimpressed by his hat twirlings but it seems you OP were charmed by some nice mocap and didn't look any deeper.

Kino would be an evil persona to oppose and destroy the hero at every turn, our hero overcoming the harm done to him and then the bad guy. Ardyn doesn't harm noctis in any way, he even helps and then he twirls his hat and smirks leaving our guys dandy and even closer to their goal than the were before. But it's explained have no fear you see he helped them so that he could lose which is just admitting he was being retarded on purpose all this time. Throw in a sad backstory about how he was actually jesus all along and still is because he's so sorry of what he's done he want to kill himself, how noble. I guess he wasn't that corrupted then in that case, if the bad guys is a good guys, who's the god damn villain in here? The scourge? It's just a fucking microbe, awesome villain there.
