Redpill me on Disgaea. Which games are must play, which are skippable?

Laharl girl? Disgaea D2. It was only thing added by original writer of Disgaea 1. And it's only good thing about whole game.
And it's just one time thing, aka one game's story chapter.
And Disgaea D2 still buggy as fuck and can freeze on you thanks to NISA.

I managed to avoid majority of freezes and crashes by loading game twice.

All of them are enjoyable but you'd probably enjoy the older ones less after playing the newer ones since gameplay gets really optimized as the games go along.
1 has the best story but aside from 1 and 2 none of the stories really connect to each other, and even 2 is hardly an actual sequel, it just shares a major character.
Opinions on most of the games are pretty split but the only one most people would say should be skipped is DD2 (Disgaea Dimension 2, which IS a direct sequel to 1) because the story sucks hard, nothing about the gameplay is different enough from 4 or 5 to be worth dealing with, and it was so fucked on release that it could actually damage your hardware. There's a reason it's the only "main" Disgaea game that hasn't been re-released. Basically the only thing it has going for it is Girl Laharl (which you can get from DLC in later games) and neat final boss mechanics.

TL;DR either start with D1 or just jump into D5

It's more of a remaster there are very little changes outside of a few replaced classes and the spritework. Ultimately it's all the same content and gameplay as Afternoon of Darkness.

The only ones I couldn't get through are 3, 5 and D2. There is just so much story content and so much pride in their lolsorandumb xD humor that wears off really fast and grinds my desire to continue to a halt. Mechanically though, 5 did everything right that it could, from what I've seen.

You gotta post at the right time to bring out the Disgaea doods! To echo what everyone else has said play D1 for better story or D5 for better gameplay. Ultimately you can’t really go wrong with either.

Disgaea 1, Disgaea 2, Disgaea 4 and Disgaea 5 are essential.
Disgaea 3 is the most skippable but it's still really good if you're a fan of the humor of the series, the story is just a bit too complex for people to enjoy it on their first run.
Disgaea D2 is absolute garbage and should be skipped, note that Disgaea D2 is not Disgaea 2. Play the portable/PC versions of whatever you can find as they have all the DLC/extra content for free.
The Disgaea anime was such a fucking mistake, most Disgaea fans just pretend it doesn't exist. You can try pretty much any of them.
I think they're treating Disgaea mobile as Disgaea 6, it even has its own opening and a lot of hype around it in Japan.

The anime is absolutely nothing like D1, I watched it like 10 years ago shortly after beating and loving the game and the only decent part was the Red Moon episode. I'd say just pirate the PSP version of 1 and give it a chance. The PSP version of 2 is also easily available. And they're both on Steam for pretty cheap.

Yeah it is, it's a collaboration with Forwardworks but NIS has their hand in it, it was Makai Wars that had no involvement from NIS.

D1 has a great story and okay gameplay. As the series goes on, the story and characters get progressively more weeb and cliche, but the gameplay gets more features and QOL changes.

Jennifer is somewhat okay, but Gordon just looks off with that dumb face.

D1 and D4 are widely considered the best games in the series.
The rest are all about on par with each other, each having their own merits and things they do worse than the others.

Best content is 4R
Difference in mechanics between the two is notable but not massive, so 4R could easily be argued to be the best, gameplay wise.

Whichever story you like most will vary massively. I enjoyed all the stories, but 4s the most.

Liar Princess needs to be a guest in future titles.

D4 Vita only has slowdowns in the item world of you are zoomed in, which there is really no reason to ever be. It also has an absurd amount of extra content over the PS3 version and runs a lot more stable.

Outside of Metallia, next to no one. The only real issue was during Disgaea 3 where the former humanoid units of D1 were made monsters because their sprites didn't fit, but even then they made a joke out of it and were made HD humanoids in the D1 remake. Ever since then everyone who deserves a humanoid form has gotten one, even Prier had a playable human form in DD2. The only other one that comes close is Gig and his gimmick has always been having an extremely broken Magichange to mimic how he worked in Soul Nomad.

My bad, but you know where you can find it.

I'm just glad it works for Metallia. She's a character I never want to have to stop seeing. I hope she gets cameos for years to come.

"Remake" is literally PC port with HD sprites. But with some QoL patches down the line. Of course they'll be there humanoids.

Play 1 on PSP, avoid the rest.

It was exactly 2 DLC characters from an 11 year old game, it's not really a pressing issue in the current year where Jennifer and Gordon do have humanoid sprites.

I guess I'm complaining because 1 Complete is fresh in memory. Asagi, Rangers, also Adell and Rozalin are all monsters there.

That's pretty lame, I guess you could argue that the Rangers, Adell and Rozalin were all monsters in the other Disgaea 1 posts they debuted in but that's a pretty lame excuse. Disgaea 1 Complete was peak lazy on NIS' part which is exactly why I skipped it, there's nothing of value for anyone who already played 1 before.

I mean, if you played her game you'd know she couldn't be further from being human. Her being monster class is pretty accurate.

I figured someone would say that and while I get where you're coming from, she's not that out there in terms of monstrous-ness compared to a lot of humanoids in Disgaea. Typically humanoids that are monster units in Disgaea are so because they have a distinct property or transformation that makes them part monster (Desco and Usalia for example).

That said, considering her origins, Monster works, yeah.

She is Niike's mana being reincarnated into a physical body if I remember right, right? I don't think it's ever disclosed just what exactly her body is, for all we know she could easily be an unwanted baby's corpse that was discarded in the swamp or something. Her form is humanoid anyways so I don't see a problem with making her a humanoid unit either.

Pretty much yeah. Unless you didn't 100% it before, doing that on PSP was a pain.

Disgaea 1 is so fucking overrated here. It has to be nostalgia. Even among other NIS SRPGs at the time it was ass to play. The story isn't even that good.

It was ass to 100%, now that was bullshit.

Play 1 since it's the best, then play the newest one (5 atm) for the updated mechanics. Don't play them all.

Literally the only problem with 1 is that healers don't get XP for healing.

It was extremely clunky and slow, which is impressive coming off of Makai Kingdom.
Also lots of stupid shit like how the assembly works and the terrible Item World. Even without comparing them to future games (and making the game look even worse in the process), they were ass features then too.
Then Phantom Brave came out and that was more fun in every way, not to mention had a likeable MC.

Anyone else unironically kinda hoping Laharl gets into Smash as DLC?

Makai Kingdom came out AFTER Disgaea 1 though. La Pucelle preceded it and it was even clunkier than D1. D1 was fine for it's time, the primary reason it aged so bad was because of how good NIS got at optimizing the gameplay.

It's not slow at all, it was the closest to feeling like an SRPG. The rest are grid based but give you way too many tools to bruteforce any strategy away in only a few hours. It was obviously still possible in 1 but due to less mechanical shortcuts like the cheat shop it took longer to outpace the story. Building your characters and progressing felt more deliberate which is what I think is missing from the later games.

Pretty sure D1 came out 3 years before Makai Kingdom. Also it was nowhere near slow and clunky, infact it was easily one of, if not the snappiest TRPG that was out when it released.
I'll agree that a few of the menus were badly structured but not to the point that it would even remotely ruin the experience.

Laharl is my #1 but he's so never ever it's not even worth talking about. Here's a list of JRPGs that would get a spot in Smash before a Disgaea character

I've thought about it a few times but can't think of something to set him apart from the other anime swordsmen apart from riding a meteor and being godlike

Disgaea's general over the top attacks would make him stand out easily. Moves like Lightning Spear, Boomerang Axe, Wind Cutter and King of Beasts would all make for a perfect moveset.

Can't Laharl use other weapon types? Also, what if he had a special that summoned a vassal to support/attack?

I'd like to think Laharl would have a Down B where he produces a Prinny and can throw it wherever he wants, the resulting explosion is huge, but if he gets hit, he drops it and it damages him instead.

problem with 5 is that it has way too little content.
I'd say 4 is the peak of the series in all aspects.
Overloads in 5 are nice to force you and use story characters, sure, but that also makes generics pretty pointless.
