Are the murder mystery segments self contained or is there an overarching story? Tbh I’m not a fan of the latter which was the weakest part of AA. I just want interesting cases without being bogged down by character drama.

There's a bigger picture story in each game which is mostly just "who is the mastermind/what do they want from this/how did we get here" but it doesn't become the focus until the endgame Trial(s), mostly getting built up between chapters until then.
Each mystery is pretty self-contained storywise, how interesting each case is as a proper mystery will depend on your taste but they generally get better as the games go on.
