two answers. pick which one matches your level of cynicism
1) the games are meant to be a social experience. they release two games with differing pieces of the same pie so that kids will come together to trade and fully experience the pie
2) money. if all the content was in one game then a family could just buy one game and then have the kids take turns playing (even though that would be a mess). when you have two different games parents are less likely to veto buying two copies. think "why would I buy two copies of the same game, just take turns" vs "oh, pokemon red and blue are different? okay we'll get both"

Well, you're right about one thing

I liked Sun and Moon, but I only used 4 mons in my party, disabled the xp share, put it on set instead of switch, and didn't grind levels so it wasn't so easy
I could see why people would dislike it though

They used to that with a 3rd game revision that had everything plus a little extra. Was a genius shekel making scheme don't know why they stopped.

To promote trading, the multiplayer aspect of the game. If they let you get all Pokemon in one game, you'd have no need to trade.

Theoretically they could just make it so you have a random chance of certain version exclusives though without releasing as two games, so also money.

Just because something is flawed doesn't mean it's shit. I still thoroughly enjoy Pokemon, don't see any signs of that stopping.

Third versions never had all the Pokemon. There were still Pokemon not in Yellow/Crystal/Emerald/Platinum etc. that you had to trade over from the original releases of those gens.

Yeah but if you think about it it's basically DLC at full game price so it's a nice gain for little effort.
I guess production costs are kind of a bitch though. I didn't think they sold that much less considering they were always the best version. Damn man that's a bitch.
