That VN is so fucking garbage I can't even fathom how Yea Forums came to love it. Maybe it was babby's first VN, who knows. All I know is that medium has so much more to offer.

When it was first translated there were a shitload of threads about for months on end. That's a bigger reaction than most great games. That was years ago, so maybe you weren't here.
Not only that, years later, it's still discussed here and there. I don't like the fucking thing, but I can't deny it became a fad worthy of a place in the board's history. Not quite Katawa Shoujo level, but still what I'd call notorious.

Forget about the side routes, is the main story worthy it?
I started playing once, went 3 or so hours deep, couldn't get into it and stopped.

There's a big twist later on in the main route that makes the side routes impossible. It's like when they wrote the side routes they didn't know about the main route at all.
Also, many – including me – think that the twist retroactively ruins everything else that has happened so far, so hopefully you will have enjoyed your time by then. Some people don't really mind it. Other than that it's all right.
I would avoid threads about G-Senjou in case someone spoils it, although people seem less inclined to do it compared to something like Fate where in six posts you will be spoiled about secrets revealed in the third route.

Play Muv-Luv Extra first. Complete Sumika's and Meya's routes (they have a lot in common, so do the one you like more first). This unlocks the secret, entirely new, story Muv-Luv Unlimited. MLU is about as long as Extra, but actually good.
You can play some of the other routes in MLE before playing MLU, but you are only required to complete Sumika & Meya.
Alternative is a direct sequel to Unlimited, so you have to play Extra and Unlimited first.
Also, the less you know about Alternative and Unlimited, the better. Even if you don't like Extra (most don't), the rest makes up for it.
