It is cliche to have white men protagonists. Video games are almost the only medium where this keeps happening. Granted Black Panther and Captain Marvel get tons of flack at least we see diversity more often in that sphere. Novels - there are a plethora of books by non-white male authors that incredibly well done and you could go for months or even years and never read a white male author again. TV shows - there are many shows that are trying this as well. Some shows are abroad like Kingdom but some are more Western like Black Earth Rising but they very well made.

However, video games due to how many white men feel as if they're the only ones who have a say on it get insanely upset.

Historically you have to look at how many white men have been heroes or protagonists compared to every other ethnicity for men and to any women period. Now there are tons of non-white men around the world and this is 2019 so yes it stale white bread at this point. I applaud any game that moves forward from the Blerd character that is Marcus in Watch Dogs 2 to Lifeline and Bangalore in Apex Legends to Aloy's no romance steadfast lady of Horizon Zero Dawn. The only time in recent games I genuinely enjoyed being a white dude was Arthur Morgan because he was pro Black, Native-American, and women unless they were assholes. And most aren't.
