What Touhou games are even worth playing? Are they actually fun or do /jp/ anons only like it for the qt girls?

All the good ones already got ported to steam. There's still quite a few that arent on and have fan translations.

Gensowanderer is probably the most complete package you can get out of a doujin game though.

For official games, any will do, it's mostly a preference on overall difficulty and mecanics, 8 is often cited as the beginner's choice. The fighting games are more of a mixed bag. For fangames, the better ones are usually the one that take an existing concept and mix Touhou with it, Koumajou Densetsu and Puppet Dance Performance come to mind. For more recent, Luna Nights has insanely good sprite work and gameplay, but is short.

If you want to learn touhou lore, read the official printworks and play the games.
Only ask for explanations if you can't figure something out, since experiencing Touhou through the explanation of a fan is by far the worse way to learn about it.
