Fucking worse. Fate/Stay Night was great because of its strong characters and story. It was not just a fucking waifu fest, and honestly, most of the story had little if anything to do about mythological heroes.
Fate/Stay Night wasn't about asking, "What if King Arthur fought Gilgamesh", it was about examining the concept of a hero itself. What makes a person a hero? Saving people? How many people? What about just one? What if your idea of "saving" them isn't what they want?
This isn't a theory I pulled out of my ass, they're questions asked directly in the story. Fate/Stay Night genuinely gave a shit about its protagonist, and made Shirou more than just a self-insert character.
Now nobody gives a shit about that stuff anymore. It's all myths and heroes, all the time. All the worst fanfiction from amateur historians is out on display, full of waifus that are nothing more than some battle animations and a few dozen text boxes. Modern Fate is fucking trash.

HF True's big payoff is watching Ilya give her life to wring a genuine little miracle of Magic out of this whole cancerous Grail clusterfuck.
