at first, try spotting holes shaped like t-blocks, and then covering one side like pic related
after you've acquired enough insight to spot these holes, you can then begin actively creating the holes yourself
of course this second part is much more complicated than the first, but it's what will allow you to consistently perform t-spins
it becomes a matter of internalizing how the pieces stack with one another and getting the hang on how to use that stacking in your favor, beyond just building up and then knocking it down
the only way to achieve that is by training, playing a whole bunch while trying to achieve the hole
you can play on tetris.com for a less stressful time while training, but it may be a little awkward to adapt to the keyboard controls

here's a good tip: you can use the opponent's garbage lines for a t-spin
after the t-spin, you can even slide a tetris if the hole is long enough

That's not even a valid comparison at all. Spins are not a bug that was never fixed. All modern Tetris games use rotation systems that specifically allow for spins and they all have explicit point/garbage bonuses for doing t spins. You have no idea what you're taking about.

I play off and on but each time I come back I get a little better. I usually can manage 8-10 chain on average. My best chain is 13 but I struggle to close or beyond that

T-Spins aren't everything user. Managing combos and garbage to keep pressure off is the fundamentals of the game.
I win about 10% off my games and I only do the occasional T-Spin double. It really depends on if I can hold out for that T-Piece I need for it or not (sometimes I have one stashed sometimes I don't).

That only applies if you're against people in the top-10 that aren't capable of t-spin abuse, since they get far, far more out of their lines with losing 2-3 lines per t-spin than you do your 3-4 likes with an L/J/I.

Depends on the time of the day you play too.
If you play right now you're in Japan-time where Japanese players are rampant and they love the technical side of Tetris.
But if you play 10 hours from now it will be mostly US players and some EU and it will be a bit easier.
Only a handful of people in either case can setup and execute T-Spin triples. Mostly because you need the room to pull it off and under pressure a T-Spin double is a semi-reliable gamble.
It entirely depends on if you're the defender or the aggressor. If you have the upper hand, then slapping people down with T-Spin doubles will net you a win, but if you're at the disadvantage, sometimes a T-Spin double takes too long and extending the timer to escape is what matters more.

Good modern tetris would find a way to fuck it up anyway.

Familiarity with using both rotation buttons / learning finesse is a good start for someone newish to the game. Other than that, a goal to go for is 1:30 sprints (40 lines), and seeing if you can get it under a minute.

I didn't know they were a thing until Tetris DS. I don't play every Tetris that comes out so that's why I wasn't aware that the games now award t-spins more than the actual tetrises the game is named after.
