I'm 25 and I don't understand some yokai, so I just interpret them all as wacky spirits and demons that are based on trivial stuff and happen to be Japanese.
Surely there is more to it and their designs have actual yokai stories inspirations and stuff even for the most ridiculous ones.

Nah, I definitely do the same. I'm happy with whatever little odds and ends I find, most of it being discarded 10-Cent Gum, or a Bronze Doll if I'm lucky. Also bug collecting, even though I'm absolutely awful at it.
Honestly I recommend playing the first game. I just think it'll help you appreciate all the changes and developments you'll see from the first game to the second, from the settings to the characters, and even the gameplay. I know I do.
