oh that's actually bringing up a good question. should there be one type of enemy but with various changes in how they attack or should i try to have variety? i guess i could still have a monkey but it's next to cats, dogs, and other animals that end up going nuts attacking various levels. they'd all have a cute vibe to them.

the rhino could be a tomboy, and you have to chase them around with nets and bolas, and each time you catch them it puts them in a bondage animation. you can go around collecting fruits and bandaids to heal up.

i was thinking weapons around secret areas doom style. stuff like a slingshot, bola, net, baton, blowgun, jetpack that lets you double jump, shoes that let you wallrun, hookshot to climb over walls and so on. you could also get vehicles like a raft and a breathing mouthpiece that scube users have to be underwater longer. that's just the start though.

What if the regular enemies are cute girls with animal features (like saiyans) bit the bosses are larger more bestial transformaions (like ozaru)

oh yeah gloves that would help you climb without the hookshot but with a limited range, it would also increase your melee damage. the shoes also let you jump further out and run faster. knee pads that let you slide to get under enemies or hit their legs to surprise attack them.

you'd also always be able to double tap strafe directions to side step quickly.

one thing i'm struggling on is if the enemies should drop anything, but what could an animal drop that would be valuable?

I guess they could drop the food most associated with them. The one the animal itself eats, not the one made out of it.

ok what if i have them count as points and still have them drop food. should the food heal you? i feel like that would conflict with the bandaids sprawled on the level. maybe replenishes a stamina gauge?

Guess you could also have optional midbosses/superbosses in a few stages as a form of replayability, or giving completionists something to do. Of course, they yield absurd loot.

ok i'm gonna do it like this. bandaids that do some healing, food will recover your stamina, and syringes for half healing. full med packs that are rare will do full healing. i wasn't sure if you should be able to choose WHEN to use it or if it's just you running through it.

make the bandaids and syringe run through and med pack player activate that way med packs stay rare keeps the player wanting to hold on to it more

AI that fulfils its role properly is much easier.
Look at, for example, Serious Sam. The enemy """AI""" is a retarded state machine that can barely even pathfind.
What you want to do is design your levels in such a way that a simple AI gets the job done, because the way the level is set out does most of the AI's thinking for it.

to be fair it's not like the Ape Escape games were good with AI.

I think you should focus more on puzzle-like gimmicks or tools in order to capture the targets, not necessarily as much on the erratic chasing.

Rather than trying to make an AI that works for every situation, make an AI that works properly for -one- specific situation, aim to put the player in that situation, and if the player decides to be a sequence breaking chucklefuck then that's on them for ruining their own experience.
Any given AI will be a fish out of water the instant it hits a player, because players fucking love to break things in creative and unexpected ways.

Item-based progression could work.
How are you planning to lay out the encounters? Is the game going to be linear, or can you progress through things in different orders?
Please don't do Legend of Zelda-tier retardation of Use Fire On Ice, Use Water On Fire where each new item is a gimmick and each bossfight is putting square peg into square hole.
Make it so your items give the player options on what they can do, give the boss abilities that have multiple ways around them, and keep adding abilities onto the boss so that the player has to figure out what combination of game mechanics lets them overcome ALL of the boss's abilities simultaneously.

Take it from me. Getting an AI to dodge requires either cheating (I.e. your backend finds a safe spot and you teleport the AI's hitbox to it and you bullshit up an animation to get from A to B), or your AI will ""dodge"" straight into things that hurt it and it will look like a dumbass.
To be fair, that's also what the player does in most situations, but an enemy isn't engaging to fight if it beats itself half the time.

Or do they typically just have each actor work independently?
I find that having a director helps immensely for stopping my guys from all dronejamming themselves and wasting their shots on each-other but it's probably not as easy as just throwing enough finite state machines at a problem until the sheer number of them proves challenging.

Avoidance fights are good.
Make sure that the fight isn't just about seeing what the enemy does and reacting to it, but is also about controlling the fight.
For instance, if your enemy throws a land mine at you every 10 seconds, you want the player to plan for this and try to bunch up the landmines over to one side of the arena, leaving open space.
If your enemy has a dash attack that leaves behind a trail of spikes, you want the player to have to manage their positioning so that those spikes don't block off any escape routes.
If your boss fires two slow-moving sine waves at the player, the player should position so that the gaps in the waves overlap.
And of course make it so the player has to be aware of their surroundings so they don't get caught out in the open or caught in a tight area if the boss is really good at those.
You want the player to be planning ahead and trying to control how the fight will go, by making it so that a player who DOESN'T plan ahead will have a bunch of hazards or dangers stack up in ways that are chaotic and hard to avoid.

No, cute little girls are just plain stronger than Oozaru. It makes sense, because the prettier you are the more plot armor you have.

i think it's gonna depend on me being willing to make the animals less traditional, being able to walk around and grab items that aren't necessarily in the wild.

You could, if you're comfortable with it, also try to rig your AI up so that the enemy goes for the punish if it sees you're open.
That's where it sees what abilities it has, sees where the player can get to within a short period of time, checks if any of its abilities cover most of that area, and if so it uses them.
Much easier to do in 2d though. Not sure if it's even feasible in 3d.

i actually recall a MEL script i have for muscle simulating stuff in maya that does this. it tells you what faces are intersecting in geometry. i should read over it sometime.

Detecting -if- two faces collide is relatively easy.
Detecting -where- they collide is much more of a pain in the arse.

ah my bad. yeah i'm not sure how that would be done. my guess is you would have to label every face with a coordinate, like with per face uv mapping. maybe ptex would help with that?

The GPU intensive is to calculate the normals and do a dot product of the 6 x 4 matrices.
What I'd do is approximate with cubes because "roughly what % of this volume overlaps" doesn't need to be exact.
