Well, starting from the beginning, scrap how everyone starts as a member of the protectorate, that's boring and homogenizes the experience. Next, bring back the racial perks, because they were pretty cool. Then, make the ship's AI the old unique ones from pre-release, instead of the same shitty AI on every ship. Next, make it so the pre-made monsters are rare-spawns again, re-enable giant birds if they didn't get added back in, and re-enable the unique attacks on monsters again. With enough time, further ideas would be to give each race it's own storyline, make NPCs functional and more dynamic than the shitty excuse they are currently, and perhaps just straight-up remove the outpost, or alternatively rework it, and then balance progression without it interfering.

It could have been Terraria but better, but chucklefish are a bunch of idiots and changed plans, canceled good ideas, removed content already in the game, added a shit story tied to most all of your progression, and generally tried their hardest to ruin it.
The end result is OK at best, as long as you mod out the story because fuck that. But it could have been the best game of it's kind and now it's barely above the level of cheap Terraria clones.

it's a sci-fi terraria with differences:
+building is far better
+material variety is much higher
+there's interactive furniture
+a wide range of npcs
+side stuff like farming and wiring are far better
+insanely comfy atmosphere, especially in the rain
+what's left of the universe is really cool in terms of lore
+there's neat dungeons to explore
-there's a forced story that drains the soul of the game while being boring
-the sandbox aspect gets hurt by the story and other centralising focal points that shouldn't exist
-npcs have quests (which is fine) but they're usually fetch or kill quests
-the "wide range of npcs" is generally just templates with programmed personalities that're all quite similar
-the game's optimisation is horrible
-the game suffers from a lack of direction
-chucklefish are hacks

-ai is very simplistic and can be quite bad
-there's randomised mob designs but they're more and more scarce by the day, and while the unique mobs can be cool they make the game feel less random for it
-there's not enough structures generated
