Was Bowser Jr. a pointless addition to the cast?

Were you under the impression that the rest of the cast had some important point?

Nah. He was introduced as a sidekick/partner to Bowser and they tend to go out of their way to make him different from Kamek.

Why does he wear that stupid bib? It ruins his design.

Did you not play sunshine?

I liked Baby Bowser better

Partially to make himself stand out from Baby Bowser, partially because he thinks it makes him look more threatening.
>The scarf with a picture of a large mouth drawn on it is his favourite. It's just a picture of his aspiring dad's mouth!

The way he was introduced and forced for years was bad and pointless.
But what has happened has happened and it is in the past, after about a decade Nintendo is doing 'okay' things with the character, so he's not actively repulsive.

He killed koopa kid

>Lasted to the end of the Gamecube era
In all honesty, I'm more surprised Koopa Kid lasted as long as he did.
Still want him back though. Junior can't fill the spot that well.

Natural selection begins at home.

Like, it was a terrible idea in the first place to introduce a new son for Bowser.
Firstly because it directly demanded the question of A) who his mother was, which was a plot point of the game he was introduced to, B) how do Koopas give birth C) where are the female koopas (of which none were hard canon at the time of Sunshine).

It also made Peach look like a dumbass/whore in Sunshine for not instantly telling them that she was not the mother.

It also was an incredibly tone deaf addition because fans loved and wanted back the Koopalings, and until that time the Koopalings had been Bowsers canon kids, and each had a ton more personality than Jr did at that stage.

And in an ensemble cast as big as the Mario games, I think people didn't like a annoying new character suddenly introducing itself and sucking up basically all plot related screen time. If you were a fan of Mario games you already had a favorite character, and you wanted to see them get the focus, not some brat.

yes

I'm still surprised that there hasn't been /ss/ comics between him and Peach.

>Firstly because it directly demanded the question of A) who his mother was, which was a plot point of the game he was introduced to, B) how do Koopas give birth C) where are the female koopas (of which none were hard canon at the time of Sunshine).
You can apply most of those to the Koopalings. The only difference is that the question of their mother was never a plot point (and this is a universe where storks exist)

>It also was an incredibly tone deaf addition because fans loved and wanted back the Koopalings, and until that time the Koopalings had been Bowsers canon kids, and each had a ton more personality than Jr did at that stage.
The Koopalings suffered a worse case of "Luigi Syndrome" - due to the change in how the games worked, it was hard to readd them to the series. Stuff like Super Princess Peach's unused data and the e-reader stuff shows that Nintendo at least tried to keep using them in some ways until NSMBW properly introduced them.

>Mario games
>Plot
Sunshine has the most (main) plot and even then, it gives up all pretenses after Pinna Park.
Junior as himself and not Shadow Mario only shows up in three cutscenes: The reveal and the two ending ones.

>It also made Peach look like a dumbass/whore in Sunshine for not instantly telling them that she was not the mother.
Probably the most justifiable and, given the retcon, she's probably shocked Bowser has a kid in general.

Bowsette Jr?

No because he led to /ourslut/ being introduced

Forgot picc

I hated him at first but he's one of my favorite mario characters these days. From a character standpoint he's got a lot of personality and from a gameplay standpoint he fills a niche of being the "Dr. Eggman" type character that always fights in some kind of machine or robot.
It took him a while to find his footing though. His debut in Sunshine was fucking cringe and he felt like a lackluster Koopaling in NSMB. I think he's been helped by a lack of overexposure. He's not 100% guaranteed to appear in a Mario game like Peach or Bowser, so his appearances are a little more fresh.

She predates Jr. by two console generations.

I love him and the Koopalings

It was either having 7 sidekicks or just 1, the latter is easy to write with

>where are the female koopas (of which none were hard canon at the time of Sunshine).

Wendy Koopa exists and she existed before the Female Goomba that Mario Odyssey existed (and yes I know Paper Mario, but that's not the mainline platforming Mario games). Speaking of which I wish there were more female koopas. Pom Pom is a neat addition, but we don't see any of the regular koopas have female counterparts. And as far as the Koopalings go, it's a real shame only one of them is a girl.

And another thing, is Bowser an actual koopa? Notice that he looks very different from the other koopas. He breathes fire, he has sharp teeth, he has hair, etc. But the common koopas even Kamek lack these features.

I naturally assume that half of the koopas I stomp were female. It's not my fault if they don't have strong dimorphism.

I liked him in sunshine. He's been consistent in every game since.

Koopa Kid should've sticked around anyways, a race of mini Bowsers that help run Bowser's land like in Mario Party 2 is pretty nice (some even had slight design changes). All they had to do was drop the part where they're his children. I really fucking miss Koopa Kid honestly.

the main problem with this analysis is that it assumes people care about the plot in mario games.

>Notice that he looks very different from the other koopas. He breathes fire, he has sharp teeth, he has hair, etc.
It's partially due to his concept: He was designed after an Ox because Miyamoto based him on the Ox-King from a Journey to the West animated movie. Bowser changed to a turtle at some point, but kept some ox-characteristics (though he does have a beak as part of his skeleton at least).
I like to think of Bowser as a "demon koopa" going off his Japanese title.
