In fact it’s one of the best PS1 games even now. The voice acting is on par with most of today’s AAA games, and there’s tons of it compared to its contemporaries. It’s a genuinely good game with clear design language and a much more rapid pace than the sequels. It’s an insipid comparison, but I’d argue that it’s something like the “Link to the Past of the PS1” in terms of lasting power and the way that its influence is still felt in games today.
Also every time I go back and play it, I’m blown away by how much of it is a straight rip-off of Die Hard

I played it for the first time a few months ago after playing the rest of the series except for 4, and I was pretty amazed how well it actually does hold up. Especially compared to 2, which I replayed immediately after (HD version) and felt like it controlled much worse.
