easy, consider Mario in general, it has 2 ways of play, 2d and 3d and every game of each category is the same with some differences or pivotal changes to the main mechanics (the spin jump in galaxy, cappy in odyssey and so on) which makes it a stable base that gets improved over time
Sonic in the other hand has been jumping from gameplay to gameplay since adventure 2 which was a refinement of 1 but heroes was something completely different and so on, SEGA is obsessed with keeping Sonic "fresh" in every iteration which has caused more harm than good as sonic is as inconsistent as it is unpredictable causing the good stuff, like generations to get dropped, the potential to be wasted like black knight, and several misses to happen like unleashed, colors, boom etc

All I said was they might have figured a lot of people were sick of Boost. Which some people were/are. The only reasons they didn't go full on and do Adventure again is because of general incompetence and because 06 happened and they're so inept that they can't figure out why that was received so poorly. They see things on a surface level rather than a technical level and that is what's killing them from the inside.

Mario shows a better understanding of his genre, and he has on multiple times defined the standards of his genre, even going so far as to invent, and then reinvent just about everything on multiple occassions. I think the best example of the difference between Mario and Sonic is that when Nintendo were developing the N64 they took a long time working on not only the game itself but figuring out how the game would properly utilize the hardware it was made for, most importantly in terms of input, with Sega they didn't take this same approach, the initial Saturn Sonic designs were actually shit, and showed that Sonic was a slave to the hardware he was being made for.
One big problem with this is that Sega still doesn't understand Sonic, they don't seem to realize the inherent value that gyro controls bring to Sonic, the ability to manually manipulate Sonic's centre of gravity or control his aim manually, finely and quickly will never make it into Sonic because Sega just doesn't get it.

I'd argue 2 was already doing that it just needed more time to refine the shooting and searching game modes

You're mixing up reasoning, Sega doesn't want to keep Sonic fresh, Sega doesn't understand what Sonic in 3d should be so they make drastic changes to the formula fumbling each sequential title trying to figure out what Sonic should be, they also emphasis story over gameplay, and they aren't willing to delay Sonic in order to ensure quality. Fans of Sonic and Mario have about the same level of adoration and possibly respect for the characters, but it is only Nintendo that holds that same level of respect and adoration for their mascot.

It isn't, but they can't go back because of poor direction. There's always the slight possibility they might go back and refine what worked in the past, but I have my doubts.

I'd agree but I base my reasoning on their decision to abandon the foundation adventure 2 had for whatever heroes was trying to do, when that didn't work they attempted 06 and shadow and both failed in recapture the idea adventure had then they started experimenting with several games like the wii ones and unleashed, never really committing to one idea and just jumping to the next, unlike the jump from adventure 1, 2 and even shadow which kept the base but refining it

They are willing to delay some games though. They delayed Mania to August 2017. Team Sonic Racing was supposed to come out in December of last year but it isn't going to be out until May. They even delayed a fucking Sonic Boom game that no one asked for to come out in 2016 rather than 2015. The only Sonic game that hasn't gotten a delay since 2014 is Forces.

Yeah, so Sega doesn't understand what Sonic really is or should be in 3d, hence them throwing away all kinds of stuff between games for no reason.

It's more than just delays, it's not even willing to ensure basic standards of quality from their games, things like Forces, Sonic 06, and Boom show that Sega just don't care. Some games get delayed but it's clear it's not the games that needed it, what's worse is that Sonic is reasonably successful, these games can afford these sorts of delays, but they are seldom seen, and it's left a long lasting stain on the series. Sega doesn't even have the decency to do Sonic in 2d right, Mania wasn't Sega, but remember Sonic the Hedgehog 4, so passionless, not even fully finished, had nothing of value. Makes New Super Mario Bros look like an artistic passion project.

I've been a Sonic fan for over 25 years. Mario chose a style, stuck with it, built on it and evolved it as necessary. Even with new and crazy shit like Odyssey, you still have the same old Luigi, Bowser, and Peach. You still have blocks, pipes, and Goombas, you still jump on enemies to attack, you still have bouncing fireballs, and you still put pairs of eyes on things that definitely don't need them.

With Sonic, every new installment is a radical departure from the previous. You have the regular 3D platforming, you have the boost formula, you can have realistic cities or cartoony landscapes, and Eggman can be a cartoon villain or a genocidal terrorist.

Other than the same characters and a few series staples, the Sonic franchise has no identity of its own. The games are also often lazily made and mediocre, but that's beside the point.

Sega's not cool enough to do something that ballsy, even though they might as well considering how consistent they are in their attempts to crash the brand with no survivors.

I can't believe that I am going to defend fucking Garfield. But here I go. Personally, I think the CG artists that developed the live action Garfield didn't take too many liberties and struck a pretty good balance between a '00 era CG rendering of a "real" cat, with the recognizable trademark elements of Garfield's comicstrip design. It's passable for what it is, and that is the best thing I can say about it. Bill Murray also did add some legitimacy too. They even made the design look more like the comic strip version in the second movie.

This Sonic design takes a lot more liberties and deviates further from the other previous designs. Though with Sonic, the character has gone through multiple redesigns throughout the games. I can see why they removed the "uni-eye" , that is a weird element to work with in a "realistically rendered" design. I guess they removed the gloves, because they thought it was "too cartoony" or something. The blue arms were already done in Sonic Boom. The reason why they were skin coloured to begin with was because of the small amount of pixels the game artists had to work with and blue on blue is harder to read as a game sprite than an orange-y skin colour on blue.

Personally, I think the design looks awkward and weird. But in a weird way, that was what I was hoping for. Jim Carey as Robotnik is going to be awesome. The buddy-cop storyline is going to be great. I think the bigger the train wreck that this movie is, the better it is going to be. But the question is, will it be 1993 Super Mario Bros movie great?

You know what? All this just makes me realize just how stupid the whole "classic design vs modern design" debacle was. I mean, it was always stupid, but this shit really puts things into perspective.

Even though we've seen nothing of it yet, they chose an animation studio rather than Paramount and also had his creator as an executive supervisor on the project. There's no way the Mario movie will be worse than this.

Game-wise, they kept a base consistent formula and added a singular aspect to change up the gameplay significantly enough (Gravity mechanics and spherical worlds, FLUDD, Cappy, etc.)

The first and last posters literally had no arguments, and some children playing a game doesn't make it good.

The problem with classic Sonic isn't memorization, and I agree that anybody who says it's the issue is probably underage. Plenty of classic games require memorization, speed or no speed. The problem with it is that the level design in the old ones aren't as amazing and rewarding as people say. I'm not going to go into Sonic 1 because everybody already knows that game isn't up to par with 2 and 3, but even when you recognize the levels in 3, they're still slow and boring. Sonic 2 thankfully has less of a problem with this, and it's the only good game in the series, and even then it still has too many precision platforming sections. I'm not even going to touch the cancer that was Sonic CD.
