We needed a system that encourages people to do things they'd rather not do in order for both individuals, and society as a whole, to survive. The issue isn't that work exists, its that at some point we decoupled the rest of life from work. Work is no longer fulfilling, and now its "just something you do for money." Even if you didn't enjoy your job, there used to at least be some satisfaction from slowly being promoted, or good work being recognized. You had a promise of improving your life, maybe not to the level of a rich man, but you improved to the point you could give your kids a leg up. We lost all that. Now most jobs have little promise of advancement. College was what you worked to get your kids into, but its a scam. Hard work is frowned on, and recognition for doing a good job is all but unheard of.
The result is a generation of men recognizing the underlying issues with the system, as they are being bared further and further every year, and choosing not to engage. Reprioritizing their lives toward hedonism, since striving for the future doesn't reward anyone anymore.

I was officially diagnosed with "depression" and spent a year doing nothing but sitting at home and playing video games. I was lonely, but actually enjoyed that time.
I started a 15 hour a week unpaid internship in my field while living at home. Did that for 8 months until I was hired part time to 20 hours a week, and I was actually pretty happy. I was making really good money, working in my field and still had time to do the things I wanted to do.
About 6 months ago I was promoted to full time, 40 hours/5 days per week with a big raise and I'm the most miserable I've ever been in my life. Way worse than when I supposedly had "depression". I have suicidal thoughts every fucking day and feel like I can't quit because I'm making stupid amounts of money for my field and experience level that my family depends on and I feel like I'll never get this opportunity again. I'm not even spending most of the money. Its just sitting in the bank.
I watched myself transform from a bright eyed rookie who was always willing to go above and beyond and help anyone out with any task to a miserable pile of shit who spends every day just waiting for the week to be over. And I loved this job when I was part-time. Its entirely, 100%, because of the 40 hour per week schedule. No one should have to give up that much of their life to work.
I've come to the conclusion that the primary problem with society is the expectation and necessity of working full time. The world is controlled by a handful of workaholics who are completely incapable of entertaining themselves and demand that everyone else keeps pace with them in order to earn the right to exist. It's disgusting.

The idea is to prevent people voting to rob other people. To try and explain the concept in the most direct way possible, one of the biggest changes implemented during the election you are referring to was the tax cut, and the removal of a large amount of regulations on industry. A particularly good example came in the tax bill where they removed the ability to claim state taxes against your federal taxes. Meaning that people living in states like California would not be receiving a subsidy from the rest of the nation.
The biggest legislative push during the last administration that resulted in the affordable care act would illustrate this as well. Huge amounts of money being taxed to help fund hospitals in massive urban centers while making it nearly impossible to operate smaller clinics on account of the increased regulations, tax burden, and red tape to operating any sort of hospital.
Now you might ask something in regards to why this is a bad thing, and to provide the simplest answer is that if you make it so the only way to succeed in your country is to live in a urban area you end up with economic stagnation because of increased property costs, decreased industrial activity on account of having a smaller workforce in those areas, and a over saturation of college educated people that can't find work. So when you have extremely disgruntled people in the country in largely underpopulated areas, and highly educated people who can't make a living you end up with a hotbed for civil unrest.

Depends on the accrual rates of the schemes so it can vary. But yeah a typical 60ths accrual final salary scheme for a retiree at 55 gives them roughly a third of their final salary for almost 25 fucking years now.
For a DC pot to give you those kinds of benefits you need to put away like half your fucking salary every year. Except when employers stopped offering final salary schemes they never raised wages to compensate even slightly.
There are still some final salary schemes open to new members but they're shit like 150ths accrual. That means if you work in the scheme for FIFTY FUCKING YEARS and retire at age 68 you'll get about a third of your final salary a year. Fucking awful.

Well I wasn't actually that user, just pointing it out.
But I think you underestimate the average working. Even the brain dead IT people tend to have some good ideas and keep up to date with the latest shit and tries to adapt it to their networks. Usually not where it matters, but they do have a bit of creativity going on, and that adds up after awhile.
I mean the CS world is a good way of looking at it. Most the advancements are done by random dudes just doing shit because they needed something at the time, and it just got adapted later on.
