Super Paper Mario to me is a flawed game, but the characters are so lovable and the story such a bizarre and interesting take on Mario that it sticks with you. It's one of those games you play through, quickly deduce "eh it was alright", but then find it subtly creeping back into your thoughts weeks, months, years down the line after you finished it. You end up going from "It was alright" to "Yeah, I loved those characters, and the story was pretty crazy too".

Also poor poor Nastasia. I felt bad for her, but I forgot how downright depressing her post-game conversation was. She's outright just wandering around wondering what the fuck to do with her life now that the man she loved is gone forever.

This. I have very mixed feelings about the game, and I understand why people wouldn't like the gameplay (or hell even the writing), but god damn I loved the characters in it.

He's also pretty resolute in his decision when battling Mario, even when Timpani, the catalyst for his spiral downward, is present. Nastasia also says he used to cherish all life, so I'd imagine he was mad but not "universe destroying" level of mad until the book preyed upon him.

The whole villain team in that game was 10/10 I loved seeing their dialogue and interactions.

I agree that sometimes Vinny starts going on about shit and doesn't stop when he gets to a cool part of the game, a recent example being when he got to Flopside and didn't acknowledge it at all for like 5m or even talk about anything in the game at all because he was going on about something music related.

But in terms of Luvbi, he was right. 7-3 and 7-4 are just huge fucking slogs after how cool the first 2 parts of that chapter were so he just wanted to get on with it. And right before Luvbi fucking dies the writers decide to insert some comedic line about her allowance coupled with the old english shit which is when both I and Vinny were like "oh just get to the point" already.

SPM certainly has lovable characters, but absolutely 0 consequences. I played it when it came out like over a decade ago so it was nice to revisit the game through the stream, but even as many fond memories I had of the game I very clearly noticed the problems it had looking at it now as something other than a tender age. That said, honestly the Dimentio twist is just as good as I remembered it, and has some foreshadowing as far back as chapter 5. There are some other parts that I remember that still hold up, and others that don't.

The interesting thing though is that theory someone said about how Luigi was the perfect vessel for the Chaos Heart because of all his hidden negativity living in his brother's shadow, a point that comes up in Dream Team when you see the thoughts he has in his subconscious. It's pretty much the only 2 instances I can think of where a character in a Mario game that is part of the main cast gets character development.

Don't forget Luigi's original final smash, created from his negative emotions of never being in the spotlight.

I think it partially leaves a bad taste because Luvbi's been nothing but an ass the entire chapter to you, so you're not particularly fond of her by the time she has to be sacrificed. If she were nicer it'd be more emotional. But I couldn't care less about an asshole character biting the dust.

Those chapters flight sections are brutal as fuck and require practice with your preferred weapon. He treats Uprising difficulty scaling like a normal games difficulty setting when it isn't that. The stages themselves are their own form of difficulty which he fails to factor in. This much is obvious with Chapter 1 at 9.0. Its piss easy because the stage itself is easy. And then there's shit like Dyntos gauntlet of hell.

It's like Dream Team, which is a huge slog in every chapter on the platforming segments, to the point where I completely dropped the game upon just getting into Bowser's Castle because I couldn't take the tedium anymore.

It's a small detail, but I adore how each Paper Mario before Sticker Star used the same exact "The End" text/font every time. I don't know if it was a conscious decision but it makes the games feel more unified.

Shit man are you me? What an experience SPM was when I played. At that point I hadn't really felt a story and its characters stick with me, but completing it made me feel a strange emptiness inside, like I had witnessed something beautiful in a way. The story and characters and their motivations was just something I would have never expected from a Mario game, and yet it existed and it was fantastic.

Part of me really wishes they'd revisit the game somehow. Bring up Nastasia or O'Chunks or another major character from the game and have them make a cameo. These guys don't deserve to be forgotten and left to a single game, they could contribute to more even when Bleck's story has ended.
