The "Joel will die at the beginning" bullshit is predictable and they wouldn't go that route, plus they are marketing the game as if Ellie is the only playable character, the game wouldn't start with you playing as Joel for the big surprise. Ellie is gonna get captured or injured real bad and then player control will switch to Joel who's been following her the whole time after she leaves the camp. This will probably be about 2/3 through the game.
Basically exactly like the did in 1 with Joel getting injured only this time it'll be Ellie.
Naughty Dog isn't dumb though, they all know everyone wants to play as Joel.

What's going to happen is that Joel will go looking for Ellie after she leaves the town. Somewhere in the middle of the game you play as Joel looking for Ellie. Remember the first trailer in the house with all the dead bodies? After you kill the enemies around the house you walk in the house and that scene plays (minus the singing)
