People are ignoring the fact that the next game is coming out in 10 years. The support of all the irrelevant characters will drop dead in favor of new characters and IPs. Characters like Isaac and Geno won't be as big as they are now because people won't care about them anymore. With that said, I do agree that Spring Man is guaranteed in the next Smash if a sequel to Arms comes out, there also might be another one or two assist promotions. The second might go to Waluigi because of the outcry over him(or it may not, after all Sakurai ignored Ridley for over 10 years so who knows), and the third is a wild card that depends on which assist trophy is relevant or popular at the time. I want to say Ashley since she's in a similair position to Isabelle, but unless WarioWare on the Switch sells like hotcakes then I don't think she'll happen.

You could argue how "desperately" Smash needs a series that sold decently and has no influence; maybe if it weren't 10 years after the last game, which was kind of a black mark on the franchise anyway.

There's no way they're going to do a hard reboot and cut a majority of the characters. The main appeal of Smash is the large roster. It doesn't have genwunners like Pokemon does so there would be no incentive to slim down the roster significantly.
