It gave me a pretty fun and heartwarming sense of adventure that I hadn't felt in a while, it felt greater than the sum of its parts.
Obviously I realize that it's hard to argue for it having any exceptional qualities because I recognize the game's flaws, but it resonated with me on a very subjective level.

A large part of it comes down to liking all of the main cast a lot, combining that with the virtually unrivaled amounts of open world party banter makes for a pretty unique adventure. Naturally this aspect isn't effective at all if one is lukewarm on (or outright dislikes) the main cast.

What gave Eraqus, as well as Yen Sid the right to determine the test is the fact that both sets of students were under their tutelage, it's not who said "go." it's who was actually the one they were under, so even if MX came up to Terra and wanted to personally give him the MoM it wouldn't be legitimate, since he isn't his master. Really the whole point is that it doesn't really matter that Yen Sid didn't start them from the beginning of their ability to wield the keyblade, it was the fact that they accepted being under his tutelage when they agreed to take the test and that got cemented even more when he returned them to zero with their skills and gave them a fresh start so they can learn how to properly use the keyblade, and the fruits of his training are pretty obvious in 3 given the amount they can do. You could argue Yen Sid isn't hands on and that's fine, but we saw Mickey's MoM in BBS and it was the same way so that's just his style of teaching.

Ansem doesn't literally represent his dark mode, but he does represent the darkness within Riku, banishing him indicates that he no longer wishes to or needs to depend on him and his power.
Repliku simply looks like that because he's a replica of what he looked like in CoM, whereas Vanitas has a similar costume either because it's a Nomura-ism or because he's made of pure darkness.

I know it isn't the most coherent or explicitly explained matter but I wouldn't say Dark Mode's absence makes no sense either.
