Yeah its pretty nifty. Get a hdd and a network adapter and you're in business for free PS2 games. The USB option works but its VERY slow when compared to burning discs or the HDD.

USB is ass. it's only 1.1 so read speeds are shit. Don't rely on it or you'll be really disappointed later on.
Best option is a bootleg network adapter with a sata port and an old SSD.

PCSX2 has terrible yerrible compatibility. Sure 95% of games are “playable” but that’s it, playable. Expect massive slowdown, graphical glitches, input lag and having to adjust every knob and button depending on the type of game you want to play

I have my old ps2 but I suspect the lazer is close to be dead. The thing has a mod chip in. What do I need to do NOW so I will ensure that when the laser stops working I will have the ability to play games via an hdd ? My mod chip only has the ability to load things via dvds.
Can I burn something onto a dvd and install something on my memory card that will enable me to load games even when the inevitable happens ?

You launch ulaunchelf from a burnt disc, install ulaunchelf to the system (I think), install freemcboot to a memory card and get a network adapter and hard drive

ulaunchelf is basically just a filemanager that can launch other PS2 homebrews. Use it to launch the FreeMCBoot installer from a USB stick.
If you see the FreeMCBoot splash screen when you boot up the console it's installed and you can set up a HDD loader any time you want afterward.

I use both. I emulate because I like higher resolutions but I also use real hardware because it's cheaper and easier than using an autism-tier CPU to emulate dodgy games like AC04.

Just use a component cable. If you're lucky you can use GS Mode Selector too.
