With the release of SFII in particular fighting games made a big splash in arcades, and many of the inner city kids who didn’t play basketball or some other sport instead channeled their competitive nature into fighting games and other alternative interests than to the norm
It should be no surprise how there are so many fighting game players who are familiar with and like things like DBZ and WWE. They were one of those kids, you know the type. For many of them this translated to fighting games as well.

In urban environments, where the majority of African Americans reside in, arcades were really popular so those games were popular among those communities. Once the 'base' of that demographic playing the genre is established, it makes it easier for future generations of that same group to get into the genre because they are more easily able to find individuals, friends, etc. that also play the genre.

There’s something to this with the intrepidness required to stick with a fighting game. I feel like a lot of the more whiny privileged kids quit them early and blame the imperfect balance as the reason the game is shit and not worth their time, while kids who don’t have many other options or have been through shit are more willing to dive into the games systems and try to master it for what it is rather than want it to be balanced like a moba with a new patch every week.
In a microcosm, this is kinda the git gud phenomenon with Dark Souls only less container to the experience of just the game and more impacted by one’s life experience.

A lot of places in Asia, Africa, and South America are either too underdeveloped or business-focused to allow for conditions for online games to exist, so the people of these communities end up spending time at arcades designed to entertain underdeveloped community members or people constantly on the move through bus & train systems.
