Matthew said the combat didn't have much depth, not that it was bad. I'd say what it lacks in depth, it makes up for with timing and the weight of combat as a whole. The combat and fights are a huge draw of the series.

I work at a vidya store and let me tell you, the majority are actual casuals. They buy games based on what they hear in marketing, what they see on the cover and what their friends tell them about. They don't actively search out industry informations about upcoming titles or whatever, they do not care about the developer unless it's Nintendo.
They are like people buying a random bottle of wine for dinner. They don't care about the year or the region the wine came from, maybe they pick something they have heard of, but most of their distinction focuses on red vs white. The industry needs them because the majority of wine being sold goes to people like them.
Casuals don't know Fromsoft. If they hear about souls games, they heard that it was hard and they were immediately disinterested. Since they don't discuss games on forums or read any vidya outlets, they have usually have no reason to think that the souls games hold anything of value to them that might be worth the difficulty.
