though accidentally Crusadering myself in a FF6 LL run was pretty great
my Golden Sun LL run also turned out pretty dang interesting, having to beat Deadbeard at Level 18(only boss experience gained)

Chrono Trigger is one of the most overhyped classic RPG's out there. Its a decent game, but people hype it up to be the best game ever, when its really just okay.

I’ve played it for the first time recently and it holds up really well imo.

Is this an FF9 mod?

>fantastic music
>novel story with lots of fantasy but understands its own boundaries, doesn't push too hard and break suspension of disbelief

It's not overhyped at all. It is genuinely one of the best JRPGs out there.

If it makes you feel any better Square Enix would do a terrible job of a new Chrono game. If anything we're better off with them not touching that franchise again.

Tried out Another Eden? It's pretty much the closest thing to another Chrono Trigger right now.

Like I said, its still a decent game, but people act like its the best JRPG ever made, when its really not. Its definitely a classic and still an alright game today, but calling it the best is stretching it and generally the people who still spout it are usually just jumping on the bandwagon or people with immense nostalgia for the game because they played it as a kid.
I personally played through it a couple times, both at different times in my life, and I came out both times thinking, "yeah that was alright" but not that it was the best JRPG I've ever played.

This, only way a Chrono game would be good is if it was directed by the DQ11 team

It even has a Lucca cameo and a character very much like Frog

I love the fact that its written and scored by two of the guys behind CT, almost as if a way to say fuck you to Squeenix for not doing anything worthwhile with the franchise.

Honestly, they throw so many free gems at you, you can easily get through this game without paying anything. You still have to grind for materials ingame to make new weapons. No options to speed it up.

Thats honestly a tough one.
A nostalgia pick would be FF4, but thats just because I loved it when I first played it.
The best one for me in terms of gameplay has got to be FF5 though, I like being able to form my own party setup.
For story, no JRPG really does story that great, but I'd say probably off the top of my head, something like Bravely Default, I guess. I liked the twist, and I thought it was done quite well. It would be equal to FFV in terms of gameplay if it didn't have the slow part of the game where you end up looping through different versions of the world though, also if it had some more job options.
Thats just off the top of my head though. I'd have to do some real digging in my memories through all the different JRPG's I played.
Another series of note I enjoy though is Etrian Odyssey, although I think thats unironically for the cartography.

None of those are things I'd call "great" stories, maybe for a video game story, but if I wanted to get super invested into a story I'd just pick up a book.

They need to cancel all FF related content besides FF14 right now & use the development money one of these

At this point they should just make DQ their flagship yearly franchise & all other projects should be put on the backburner since they cannot be trusted with anything non DQ related until they bring back Sakaguchi as Director

3 could have been better if they'd focused just on Hugo's story
