The film, while amazing in it's own right, not capture even a fraction of the complexity of the plot and characters of the manga. It's understandable, each volume of Akira could very well be a film really, but it simply fails to tell the story that Akira really is.

Seriously, I was blown away by it. The story and characters are so much more then the film lets on, most of the main cast in the manga didn't even appear in the film or was reduced to a cameo. Again, the film is still amazing for its animation but as a plot it butchers the manga and to me it's just a damn shame since so many people love the film but never touch the manga.
While not the only one it is one of the few manga series I have the full collection for. I got extremely luck and found used copies of the fourth, fifth, and sixth volume at a bookstore for dirt cheap when they normally cost like $30 each.

It's alright, nothing can ever beat the original though

Cyberpunk can be generic shit and still be sufficiently cyberpunk. Obviously it doesn't "translate into gameplay" since no narrative theme does in video games, but as long as the story meets the criteria, it's cyberpunk. The color releases are nice but sadly I don't believe they were ever finished, at least not in English. I've found them occasionally in the wild but as you would expect they can be a bit pricey. Nothing insane but the colored comics are much smaller so there's a lot more of them and it adds up.
