It starts off not too bad, then it gets pushier, then it wants you to jump on all the latest trends (The dev cycle of DA:I is this bit, going from MMO attempt to just a weird single player MMO with micro-transactions so they could get some use out of it), then they tell you to work on something which isn't even remotely like what you guys do and have no expertise with (Anthem) while, in this case, getting the team who was founded to make assets for DLCs, make a full blown game.

Austin was created in '06 to make KotR, and the Montreal sub-studio was created in '09 to jew the Quebec government for tax benefits, promoted to full development for Andromeda, and then taken behind the shed and shot. It's likely a bioware fuck up with memory allocation, and i don't think this has happen before. You could argue Sony shares some blame by not reserving enough memory, but i'd argue if literally every other dev can work with it bioware and EA should to and if they can't it's on them. I've seen this happen personally on my ps4 (didn't pay for it myself, profile sharing with a mate), the game is full of a myriad of game breaking bugs too:
Reviving team members not working, ultimate bars displaying incorrectly so you get mislead to believe you have it active when you don't, missions that become impossible to progress in and result in different players endlessy dropping in and out but the missions stay active in the quick play matchmaking list, the inability to even get into the fucking robot in the first place so you literally can't launch missions.
It's such a broken mess and literally unplayable at times, I'm glad even the dummies that paid for it can get their money back.

Can anyone explain to me why Frostbite isn't good for RPGs again? I mean, they say that its hard to make inventory systems work for it, but DICE clearly had to have the basis of an inventory system working for lootboxes to work and lootboxes have been in the game since BF3.
Likewise, they claim that saving is difficult with frostbite, but then all of DICE's games since BC2 have had advanced save functionality such as single player checkpoints, xp, cumulative multiplayer performance statistics that are handed off to central databases etc.

ofc it's the latter, it's the same thing with Bethesda. good old fashioned incompetence. they have an entire division dedicated to working on the engine. to say that's a game changer for a company is an understatement. It's just not reliably feasible to believe that the UI, of all things, is overly difficult to manage.

Problems in inventory usually revolve around inheritance and memory. Bethesda uses an extremely simple system where inventory items are reduced to a simple alpha-numerical list, whereas other games will create pointers to those objects, thus retaining them in memory as unique. RPG's tend to have extremely high memory demands for unique objects, but it's not something that is necessarily hard to deal with, it certainly isn't something you deal with late in development, this is very early on. Outside of that i can't think of any reason why they would say something like that other than incompetence.

Whoever said that has no idea how games are built or what an engine is. Inventories and menus you could make on XML on top of literally anything and it would work infinitely better than any menu overlays BioWare ever made. Even KOTOR had terrible menus and relied on them for everything including combat but at least it was a great game underneath all the jank.

Maybe the issues are related to third person action and animations. It's just a guess considering the engine was tailored to fps games.

One of the main excuses that the ME:A guys put forward for the low quality of the game was that they had trouble making frostbite do inventories and saving and were struggling to get them up and running less than a year before release... so you're probably not far off the mark there.

DICE had a functional third person camera and animation system for Star wars battlefront before work on ME:A even started and they did that purely as an afterthought to the FPS gameplay.

You know you fucked up at the highest level when your platform has to apologize for your fuck up.

That's like fucking up at your job and your employer not only fires you (which is usually enough) but apologizes to the entire community and customer base for your mistake in addition to whomever you personally slighted with your fuck up. The employer understands that your fuck-up was of such a magnitude that if they didn't enact the most severe of damage control they would forever be harmed by how badly you screwed up.

There's a story of the head of XBox approaching Steve Ballmer about red ring. They said it would take hundreds of millions to offer the support that would fix the problem for somewhere around 70% of XBox customers and Ballmer was like, "Do it"; like a man walked into the office and said "I need 100 million dollars" and got it. Fucker saved the XBox brand.

Although not as serious as what Microsoft had to do then, it comes about as close as a software developer can get. Just imagine how badly they neglected compliance testing to get to this point; just imagine how many corners they must have cut for this to happen.

Clearly there are issues on using that engine for things not fps. From Amy Hennig on her experience on the SW cancelled game:

"we obviously had to take the Frostbite Engine, because there was the internal initiative to make sure that everybody was on the same technology, but it was an engine that was made to do first-person shooters not third-person traversal cinematic games"

Seems like Frostbite limitations had a huge impact on that project failure.

Frostbite being used in all projects is not inherently related to it's capacity to deliver. It's a business decision from EA. Using inhouse engine it doesnt pay fees to a third party.

The only people who have had major complaints about the engine are bioware and Hennig and those complaints only started getting wheeled out when projects that were low quality across the board started bombing. Having UI problems or animation problems is a compartmentalized problem that has little to no bearing all the ways that a game like ME:A was bad.

The UI issues didn't make ME:A's story shit or produce amateurish cut scene animations, yet the engine has always been their primary excuse, because its something that they can pretend they weren't responsible for fucking up and mismanaging.

All games made with it that werent fps had issues. From Inquisition and Anthem passing through Mass Effect towards Fifa and NFL. You can't say it's coincidence all these games have glaring technical issues. At some level the tools gotta be influencing the output of these teams.
