People don't account for how motion capture adds another layer of interpretation, that of the director telling the actor what to do. Just Cause always does great work and because they're staffed by expat actors you don't have issues like in the recent RE movie where Chris's face was all over the place because the mocap actor moved his face differently than how the character would. The director didn't make clear to Southworth how to emote as Vergil -- Southworth last mocapped Vergil in the PS2 era before facial mocap. Being Vergil is more than just squinting. He's an edgy little firecracker of barely-repressed rage. He's intense, cold, and tyrannical. His only virtues are his sophistication, honor, and the humanity he tries to hide. He's the future school shooter that always keeps his eyes focused and his jaw tense. That wasn't translated.

They've been designing western-styled characters for years now and most of the game looks great. And the really funny thing is that DmC's biggest problem is that it has to get compared to some of the greatest action games of all time. DMC coming back is actually a great thing, because now people can look at DmC through the lens of "Wow what a weird little hidden gem this is", which is way more favorable than "Can't believe we got this shit instead of DMC5". As someone who actually likes Vergil, here is why: he's a good contrast to Dante.

I wouldn't particularly like him on his own. He works well as a balance to Dante. His combat style is more precise, his behavior is more calculated, and his motivation is very different while still being reasonable. Like he's wrong, but he's not a monster. Just a dick.
He works really well this way, but if he were the sole protagonist I would fucking hate him.

I think DmCs biggest problem was that the guy behind it was so far up his own ass he thought he could just trash the people that were fans of the fucking series and "gaming journos" stuck up for his ass.

RE engine is fine, the engine itself doesn't stop them from using unrealistic faces. The rest of RE engine's capabilities are pretty great.
