Why is Japan so good at making enjoyable and fun games? It's literally just a small island in the middle of nowhere, yet they made like 90% of all my favorite titles

The combination of isolation, intelligence, a whole period of their existence dedicated almost exclusively to art and beauty (Heian period, similar to Europe's Renaissance) and paganism being always prevalent in their culture (shintoism) makes for a very creative people who values beauty and fun

>small island
>126M population

Its not a "small" island, its in the epicenter of East Asia and one of the most influential countries in the world with 3rd biggest economy and 10th highest population.

you will make wrpg-kun mad, op

hi

Devs in japan like vidya, western devs don't.

aren't they back to being the 2nd with the trade wars?

Because their society has more than enough to survive on and very few issues so they have time to spend on non-survival related tasks like art and games. Compare that to the west and all their fucked up issues, it’s no wonder they suck.

Radiation

They put gameplay first, once gameplay is down then they come up with the setting and story, in america is usually the exact opposite, first the "message" then the gameplay
They also make plenty of stinkers though, mostly when the appeal is in story or anime girls instead

This looks good, is this MMD though?

honestly ever since Yea Forums has been going to shit I've been gravitating to japanese sites and dedicating more time to learning japanese
it's just so nice and refreshing that people aren't looking all day for identity politics and incel shit all day to get upset about and instead are just having fun

“For example, when we used to have Kojima Productions L.A.—we had an office in Los Angeles—we would get proposals for new games, pitches. It always started with: ‘This is the world you’re in. This is the experience I’m going to give you.’ And gameplay was relegated to page 5 or 6 or 10,” Amaro tells Glixel. “It was always about who you’re playing, who is the character, what’s going on, but not the ‘how,’ how am I playing this?”

“In Japan, a pitch is a page, maybe two. The first page you write what the game is about and how you play it,” he continues. “And the second page, maybe you need an illustration. We don’t care about who, or what the story is, what the game world is, all of this doesn’t really matter.”

Because you'r a weeb

please stop, for wrpg-kun's sanity

You know what the biggest mistake and missed opportunity of Yea Forums always was?
The fact that is not just a textboard
5ch is so great because its all text
Imageboards were a mistake. yeah I know we used to have textboards in the past but nobody used them

the biggest mistake was when hirocuck decided that he wants this site to be reddit2.0 shitposting boogaloo
now other than a few corners there's barely anything resembling the original Yea Forums of otaku culture and now it's just american identity politics and incel shit

>the epicenter of East Asia
Only because China collapsed in on itself in the last 200 years.

China is constantly collapsing they are very good at it

>heian period compares with the renaissance
Kek weebs

Basically this, the vidya companies in the West are always looking to expand and each expansion adds more idiots who don’t like vidya to the audience. Also the West is in general decline. 20 years ago people who didn’t even really care about vidya were playing games that would be considered impossibly hard and thus unlrofitable today.

>stupid armchair sociology shit about how japs are aliens folded over 1000 times

Japs had to make all their own computers in the early days because thier writing system was utterly incompatible with OSs of the time. That led to them becomeing a tech giant and making all thier own shit and being completely isolated from normal computer game trends, eventually resulting in consoles and arcades. The more you know.

>le funny wojak
opinion discarded

The radioactive waves from when we blew them up twice enhanced their mental capacity tenfold.

Japan understands that reality itself is already realistic enough and that creating realistic fiction is just creatively limiting. Fiction should take advantage of the fact it's unrealistic to create interesting things that can't be found in reality.

It's because westerners are COMPLETELY soul-less. You see evidence of this in everyday life, their media, their culture.

I don't know why people keep talking about gameplay, gameplay in japanese games is always turn based combat/musou/souls or sometimes some basic shooty tooty.
There's nothing interesting about it, the interesting part are the stories and the characters while western games try way too hard to be "mature" and suck the fun out of what's supposed to be a game.

So the cancer started with them
