nexon somehow managed to fuck up everything about it while simultaneously ignoring all the feedback from the betas and the early launch. they're just now implementing some changes, but not only is it too little too late, but some changes are just outright not addressing the real problem. the biggest example being Fair Fight.

They also fucked up UGC even more than it already was, since they made a small attempt to curb UGC ripping by making it 5 bucks just to create a single costume piece.

The only thing that the game is good for lewding thicc chibis.

If you're into fighting games and have autism, try Blaster.

If you want an unga but fun class, try Hero.

Pretty much every class is viable though, except Jett. Also you need link and legion stuff to optimize your damage so you make most classes anyway.

I don't know if there IS a way to relive the OG maplestory days, I just dont know if you can relive the early 2000s enjoyment of online MMOs. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong and need to join some forms/discord servers since it doesn't always feel like you make connections organically in some games anymore.

I know there's games like XIV that are still ongoing, but let's be honest, those are single player games. You may have teammates, but there's no interaction, they might as well be bots (who screw up sometimes). You never speak to them or form a group, you just click a button on the duty finder and wait twenty minutes. All trade is done through a faceless auction house, all content is instanced, all mobs are tethered to their spawn. There's no fighting over spawns or spontaneous teamups against a tough enemy. There's no exploration, it's all about efficiency. There's no customisation, everyone gets every skill and every stat point at the same rate, the only difference is gear. Old content rendered totally obsolete because every patch pushes you toward the new hotness. There's no mystery any more, everything is datamined on patch day and if you haven't cleared the latest raid boss in the first week you're out of luck because everyone's already moved on. Top players aren't idolised any more, everyone's too jaded to care about anyone but themselves. It's unironically soulless.

Maplestory always catered to the Koreans, which is its main audience. The reason why this needs to be mentioned is because the game has always been a success over there. During the Black Mage update (Summer 2018 in Korea) Maplestory was a top 2 game in cafes, and before that the game has always been top 10 most played. The demand for the older formula is not as big, but at least Reboot establishes rules that the NA playerbase desires more. This is because NA Reboot is more popular in its server compared to KR Reboot. Koreans like their p2w slot machine progression system where NA desires lifetime grinding more.

Didn't you ever play? Back when third job came out there was a cloud of newbies hovering around high level players hoping to see those sweet new skills. Characters like Tiger and FangBlade were celebrities because of the top level ranking on the launcher, and the servers went up in flames during the race to 200. People would use Dark Sight to hide in boss rooms at low levels just so they could watch top players fight bosses. Saying they were idolized isn't an understatement.

MS made it hard to play other side scroller games. Nothing comes close to it's utterly fantastic artstyle, the games depth, it's music, environmental variety, comfiness and it's core gameplay. I've never actually managed to fill the void left in my mind and soul since I stopped playing, nothing comes close. It really was the perfect game in my opinion

I remember blowing a stupid amount of time farming for 500 or 1000 of those drums from the toy bunnies, and getting a pan lid and red whip as drops. Kind of made it worth the hours spent. Too bad I never got the mage shield you got from killing loads of time ghosts, because I blew a ton of time on those too.

There was a free world migration event around a year ago. At that time every server that wasn't Reboot, Scania, Bera or Windia was a ghost town, so the community as a whole agreed to migrate to Bera. Now only Reboot and Bera are active, with Reboot being more popular.

The game is completely dead in the west, lack of supply skyrocket the prices, bots makes the progression bearable (especially to f2ps) because they absolutely destroy the prices and makes gms closer to kms (where everything is really cheap, though mesos have high value)
The issue is being unable to make mesos with what bots are selling but there are plenty of other ways around it which bots won't touch much
In the end the only smart way to play MapleStory is learning korean keyboard (because of captchas) and moving to KMS, sadly not an option to me anytime soon because of very heavy sunk cost

The LHC nerf was a pivotal moment that ultimately killed GMS and Scania in particular. KNexon didn't understand it was the wild west in GMS, and things had to be like that(lots of hackers, meso farmers & sellers, people paying to win, high level secret cliques controlling the economy) to retain it's already dwindling population, they must've thought people would've just quietly accepted it and moved into other areas of the game to play but in reality they just left and the game became an even bigger husk of it's former self from that point onward. The only people who really stayed after the nerf were long term loyalists who hadn't yet found other activities irl or games to fill the void and hardcore no-lifers drizzled by the occasional casual player who too would inevitably leave.

You could say that at that point the game was utterly fucked, plauged by pay2win, hackers and meso farmers and it's true but it was still alive, people were playing, paying or not, and having fun. LHC was like one of the last places in the game that actually had shit going on, people going there to train, leech, show off their gear, watch hackers fuck up the map, etc. Nerfing LHC spelled the beginning of the end for Scania and GMS.

Maple was going to die eventually but somebody at Nexon HQ really wanted to speed up the process.

I'd say modern Maplestory is better in terms of content, but in terms of community, client optimization and progression system, it's fucked up. Party quests are still a thing, except they're no longer the viable method for leveling up so nobody plays them unless an specific event tells you to do so. There's more endgame and 'checkpoint' content, but it's mostly solo'd because the community has developed a culture like that, also expeditions were removed years ago, so no more organizing a team of 30 well equipped players to defeat the endgame content. Classes are more fun to play than their older counterpants, but that's subjective since you may prefer the slower, more relaxed playstyle of older classes (most current classes were retooled to play faster).

I wish I could play modern Maple solo, just to bask in the art, music and gameplay again but I just can't, it hurts too much, mainly because I played for many years when the game was still populated and the memories kill me quietly

the only problem i have with official maplestory is the terrible shitty progression with all the dailies and other assorted annoying nu-mmo elements, the most fun i've had with maplestory is on pservers that completely overhaul progression to make it more akin to older maplestory aka grind mobs till your dick falls off to progress, sadly the only guy that made good servers just stopped so there's no enjoyable way for me to play maplestory currently, basically just waiting for someone else to pick up where he left off, i know there's a niche for this shit since these servers were some of the most popular ones.

How broken was LHC in terms of exp in comparison to the usual grinding spots?

I was a Marksman. They got rid of minimum range, gave a mini flash jump, altered how snipe worked, puppet doesn't work how it use to, and possibly other things as well. There was some emphasis on spacing with archers between you and your targets unless you wanted to whack enemies with your bow, especially pre-4th job. You won't be using power knock back much, if at all, during 3rd job just due to how big enemies are and how much touch damage they did.

if some random gook company could do it 16 years ago, someone with some passion and game dev knowledge could easily make something just as amazing, there's really just been no attempts at another maplestory style game since the ones like latale and wonderking which were made shortly after maple.

They didn't get a gimmick? Bow Master got one in the form of switching between three different arrows. Hell, most adventurers were revamped to focus on one particular gimmick/niche.

I think I played from like 2004 to 2008, the highest level I ever reached was 60 something. When I stopped playing I was just entering my teenage years, and I remember thinking at the time "God I just wasted so much fucking time and money with that shit game." But now those few years that I spent glued to my computer as a kid are some of my fondest memories. I had a great traditional childhood with lots of close friends that I played with outside, and my memories from surfing the net and playing online games in the mid 2000s are on par with my real life memories. Really speaks a lot to just how engaging and immersive these communities were.

It was pure community fun.

It was pretty broken but it also depends, I mean people still did train in other maps all the time due to the game actually having a population back then and them either not knowing about the LHC party bonus, following internet guides or just wanting to play different areas.

LHC's brokeness I think is tied to how hard you exploited the map as a party. As solo it wasn't that broken, I believe there was a small bonus, what % exactly I can't recall, but it wouldn't be enough for you to disregard other areas but at the same time you would not go to LHC to solo anyway and you really couldn't because every channel had a party in it already, and in a party you could I think double your exp with supporting characters which you could run as bots if you had spare laptops/computers. I think around level 120 or something LHC gave diminishing returns so you would have to migrate to the end game maps eventually. So yeah it was kinda broken but it also depends.

The one good thing about LHC I remember is it gave the average player who weren't apart of the higher echelons of established boss-run cliques a way to make meso because there were always people going there who would pay for leech and you could make very decent meso training people which you could use to buy advanced level gear or deck yourself out with desired cosmetics

Minimum ranged removal was a good thing. Not only that, you are rewarded for shooting afar. Puppet was upgraded to a beefed up vacc version. And Snipe would not work in a game with a damage cap of 2.1b.

No, it took the simplicity of item progression and upgrading to something with too many layers with more stat lines and what those stat lines did. It went against what the game was, a simple game and that was part of the games charm.

potential is very simple though, you can't dispute that the game would have been the same thing with more progression options if they had just built them into the games systems instead of making it a p2w feature, scrolling for example is way more convoluted than cubing is, adding cubing on top doesn't really make it any more complicated.

It wasn't. There was less downsides for a ranged character. I liked the duality with melee needing to be in close were as ranged needed to have some distance between them and what they fire at.

The previous puppet was very functional, having to aggro an enemy and then setting up a puppet to transfer the aggro to.

Adding just attack was simple, having to look at attack and then how many lines an equipment has and then what those lines are isn't as simple to acquire. Get your main stat percentages along with boss damages, it also tips the game further away from party content with significantly beefing up characters that are more fortunate enough to have the better equipment along with just another time sink in the game which has enough time sinks already. You still need to level up, get job books, items, scrolls, possibly leveling up other characters to get passives to other characters, you don't need to add onto this.

Did you forget about mages who had no minimum range? Or hermits who can ignore that by simply jumping? Why would you want to gimp yourself like that?

You have a bunch of tools to use from the passive enhanced speed to power knock back and dragons breath to try to manage mobs and keep spacing. It is what the class is about, and compromising that play style makes the branch less unique and more homogenized with the rest of the game.

Hermits would need to jump away instead of straight up since later enemies had some verticality to them.

Your real life experiences must have been good if you didn't come back and dabble in MS after 2008, but it's cool you now really do appreciate just how special that game was. Its one of a kind

There's this building in Kerning City containing that creepy girl doctor and if you go into the bottom left part of the map you can lie down and your body and ign is completely hidden.

I remember being in kerning and then some random guy persuading me to go into the building and to drop my earrings in the corner for item duplication. He promised me nothing would go wrong and he would even stand far away near the top so he couldn't grab the earrings. So I went to the corner, dropped my earrings, the dude laying down beneath my picked them up and then fucking ran away with that laughing emoji face.

I contacted the guy via pm and said I wasn't even mad and that was amazing lmao and then he felt bad, came back and gave me my earrings back. I really was amazed though, and that was some funni shit.

you know, there was another maple thread a year or so ago and I thought fuck it, let me see if I can find anyone from my old pre-bb guild back in the day.

Turns out, one of my original guildmates used the same name on another forum, and I was able to find him on steam with a similar username. He remembered me and we reminisced a bit, now we play other mp games on steam occasionally. I can't tell you how happy it made me that he remembered me and the guild from 10+ years ago.

Mabinogi comes to mind. Both the combat and "daily life" aspects of the game are very unique, though it is Nexon so expect microtransactions and P2W out the ass
Aion Online is another good one. It's very similar to WoW but it looks 20 times better.
I made plenty of friends in both games over the years. Something about the combination of a genuinely good MMO that happens to have anime-esque graphics seem to attract a genuine sort of audience who like being friendly. You'll run into some genuine autists once in a while because anime but there is very little trolling or toxicity.

This is so true. After MP3, LHC was really the social hub of the +100 player base. I have such fond memories of the countless times I would join a party and hang out with 5 strangers for the next 8 hours or so. If you got along really well, you could take breaks and alternate on the grinding. Also being a priest was a big bonus and they were always in high demand.

The nerf really killed the social aspect of grinding.

It truly was a great piece of content. It was for many the only viable way to 4th job.

With everyone posting music videos it reminds me of what made maplestory click too well with me back in the day. The environments were straight up 10/10 comfy and really helped you feel like you were part of a bigger fantasy world. This is something I feel most modern mmos really lack, including maplestory 2. The small block instances just fail to even match the scale or atmosphere of maplestory 1, I even tried MS1 again after reaching max level in 2.

MMOs just seem too concerned with endgame these days. I miss max level being a pipe dream and just enjoying the world at my leisure. I play a lot of Killing Floor 2 rpg servers and it has the same sorta lost feel even though its not a proper substitute. Just grinding away and goofing around with a community, oldschool mmos touched on that so well yet going forward they all became instanced competitive messes for shitters who couldn't handle combat in real games. I fucking hate it bros.

I never had friends and always played the game alone except when I did party quests, Runescape was better and I had friends there and it had a more active community back then where you could get social with anyone while grinding skills or hanging out at a town. Also unlike every other MMO Runescape actually had good quests.

At first there were only the generic "explorer" classes, then the cygnus knights and resistance classes were introduced. The first named characters put in the game were the "Heroes," the characters from the past who initially sealed the Black Mage, who each were frozen in time/appointed a successor/etc and have reappeared to take him down again. There are some other named characters now from a variety of different factions like Sengoku (characters transported from some alternate version of past Japan to the Maple world), Kinesis (a dude transported from present Korea to the Maple world), a couple of dragonoid people from Grandis, etc
I honestly dislike the direction they're going with the named new classes, but whatever, they've been doing this for many years now

I disagree, it's easy to zone out and grind when there are interesting discussions in guild chat. Maplestory has one of the best chat systems of any MMO (if not THE best)

Instead of mind numbing grinding you do the same raids/weeklies/dailies ad nauseum hoping to "progress"

On top of that Nexon learned nothing from MS1 and MS2 feels a lot like MS1 pre big bang where 90% of the maps were useless. At least back then it was entertaining to find a fellow explorer and party up.

Its even worse because people are either in instances or in their houses. /vg/ players are the only ones I've sees even attempt to hang out in the over world as most groups stay inside houses.

All in all there's no real social aspect despite there being a ton of stuff that should encourage it.

Still the team working on it seem to legitimately love the game and have been surprisingly communititive and are learning to listen where it counts. I just hope it's not too late.

There are only a couple of polearm/spear classes (Aran and Dragon Knight) in Maplestory and neither of them are especially mobile

I played maple again back in 2015, but in a private server called ElliniaMS. It was actually very fun, I played with 4 other friends.
But holy fucking shit was it GRINDY. We played as many hours as possible every day and we grinded like mad. Thankfully leeching was decent, and thanks to pets we could automatize most of it, but it still was insane the amount of grind we did.
But thanks to those days, I feel like I was finally able to get closure on this game. Before, I always felt like I wanted to play it again, like I hadn't experienced it all, even if I played from 2006~2008 and again in 2012. I finally could say "that's it, I'm done with maple for good, now I can just remember these times fondly and I'll never feel the need of playing it again".
Feels good, it was a good ride.

Yeah, it was a dragon-themed class with a hint of darkness before and it was revamped into being solely a dark-spear wielding class. Some of the older players got pissed, but not enough for the changes to be reverted

What made them so fun? I think it was the forced interaction with strangers and the banter while you were sitting on your comfy in-game chair waiting for the previous party to leave. Everything in the game just felt extremely comfy and soothing.

Nexon making it so that every class is a one man army killed pqs. Literally all the new classes have 0 party buffs. Also lacking content that necessitates actual gameplay above killing things (I blame them for making literally too many classes and not fixing the base game. They balance classes every few months but cant do the same to literally the game itself wtf).

What the fuck were they thinking? Zakum was integral to fast leveling post 4th job and now they're just artificially extending the grind. I realize it's not long compared to the endgame grind, but if you take link skills and legion into account for each class it adds up
