It's definitely the best example of what happens when you continue to buy a product despite decreasing quality and zero innovation.
Theres no bigger suckers than the pokemon fanbase, they will buy this, and the next game even when they turn out to somehow have even less features than the last.

Definitely worth a try. Combat is pretty tedious, but writing, characters and setting more than make up for that IMO. I'd say it's a classic on par with VtM:B which got undeservedly forgotten
