Starters are just a rental pokemon you're given until you catch another pokemon, at which point the starter is given back.
You can get the starter back at the end of, or at least, later into, the game.
Starters make the game way too easy and I always just slap them into the PC anyways. They always have the same sorts of movesets and the same nigh-useless ability.

Something that feels like it's missing from the newer games is the sense of adventure the old games had. I think part of that is the more minimalistic in game art style though. Give me that wonder back, make the game much harder to progress through (possibly just with a hard mode option even?) and, although it means very little to the game itself, go back to the water color styled art the first gen had, I love that shit

revamp starters entirely, the ideas people suggest of changing up the typings/ doing away with a trio entirely sound good to me. maybe just one starter with a branching evo even.
fixing pokemon in general: add a normal mode for casuals and their children and a hard mode for manchildren, this time make it selectable at the beginning and unchangeable after selection. I don't get the retards that complain about starter type then want Psychic, Dark, Fighting, etc...we just got those exact starter types in gen 6.

By having the starters be the same types every single time, it's like playing the same game over and over and over again.
What I propose is a random pokemon system. In the beginning of the game, the professor gives you a pokeball. When you open it, you discover that it's a random pokemon from the generation the game's in. Obviously, this excludes legendaries or powerful-from-the-get-go pokemon.
By doing this you'd be making the game much more varied. Instead of choosing which of the three you want, you're stuck and will have to bond with the pokemon you ended up with. It'll be different every time. I probably shouldn't bring up the anime, but didn't Ash have to put up with his Pikachu? It was random, he didn't have a choice since all the starters were taken
