On one hand, I understand your frustrations, on the other hand, some of these translations I feel wind up adding more character to the work that would otherwise just feel generic or flat. If everyone translated with the exact tone in mind, we'd never get situations or events that bring fans around to the game, like "You must defeat Sheng Long" or "L i t t l e m o n e y . . .".

If you've ever done any amount of translation work with Japanese, you'll understand that a lot of the time, you aren't given a whole lot to work with.

You punch up scenes and dialogue because if you didn't, you'd be left with some really stale shit that nobody would ever say, or you end up with a series of stock phrases uttered over and over again with no variety.

Pic related is pretty much a set phrase that gets used somewhat frequently in Japanese. Shit dude I heard some wrinkly obasan tell this to someone on the phone the other day. When was the last time you heard ANYONE say "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" in real life?

Japanese is a really expressive language, but in vidya/anime nobody fucking pushes it to its limits, and English versions HAVE to be "enhanced" and punched up because our "stock phrase" library is so much larger than what is commonly used in Japanese.

But you have no idea what implications dialogue can have on a character, the story, the themes, etc. No matter how "tropey" it feels, it is not worth risking altering something that you have no idea what intention or meaning was behind it. Only the original director/writer or someone communicating with them has the right to do that.

Whether or you like it is your call, but things like aggressive repetition of phrases and strict character archetypes are things intrinsic to their own way of doing things. Most of their live-action screenplay also features the "over-acting" quality EOPs love pointing at, let alone the fact that repetition is just part and parcel of the language use whether on screen or in real life. I'm not sure how/why you even began learning the language if you couldn't even come to terms with these things.

you do realize that a lot of these english translations just don't fit in? You understand a context and already know what they are supposed to say, but english translations have always be known for being lazy, meme'd up and simply out of context.
For example there is a japanese wordplay as a joke in the text. This requires creativity to make it work since if you translate it 1:1 it'll not make any sense so most of them replaces them with a joke understandable by english speaking people. The bad part of this is that the joke will most likely be completely different, but like I said it requires creativity to stay on the topic WHILE making sense to english speakers.

This is even worse at the transition of english voice actors, who are known for being as interesting as watching grass grow.

It is true that some things will be lost in translation and creativity is necessary to find solutions, but that doesn't give you the right to completely alter characters, conversions, or even the plot of something because it seems more interesting to you. If you want artistic freedoms, work on a joke translation.

There was a steins;gate fan translation that I played that replaced 2chan memes with Yea Forums memes which was fine because it carried over the context that kurisu is a disgusting meme spewer.

There is a bit of merit to this but has taken it too far.
Before criticising it's best to get your facts straight and at least return to the source.
If you don't know the source language, try and get some commentary on it. But still be wary about that commentary. Sometimes the translations they give can be subtly off. Occasionally, outright wrong.

Though the recurring problem is translation doesn't deal primarily with converting words from one language to another. Machine translation is the extreme of this.
It's conversion of tone, meaning, authorial intent.
Literal translation loses that. Overly liberal translation shits on that.

I didn't have any issues with Persona 5's translation, none at all. I guess people expected completely casual "like you'd heard your friend talk to you" type sentences, as opposed to slightly more formal speak, which fits because it's a fantastical universe and it gives everything more weight. I'm not looking to be immersed, I'm looking to have a great experience looking into this gameworld, so less casual language only enhances that, like reading a really cool-sounding bible passage.
