Could someone remind me of the how the combat/stat system works? I picked the game up for a while and I'm pretty far through, but none of the in-game tutorials really clarify what all the stats do (Dex/Agility/Strength) or any advice on later-game combat.
I seem to be able to near-permanently spam Rex "Spinning Slash>Anchor Shot>Spinning Slash>Anchor Shot" if I want to, but that also seems to draw a bunch of aggro, is it better to control the tank in order to have better management to keep Aggro off of Rex, or will he not put out anywhere near as much damage without me driving?

Late game tanking isn't all that important. Put Avant Garde medals on everyone and they'll be healing from their crit damage. Once you upgrade Poppi you'll be hard-pressed to take aggro from her anyway because she'll do absurd amounts of damage.

It's the same for the most part. The biggest difference is that there are only 16 critical paths, so each element allows only two distinct branching paths.
For example, in the base game, you could do either Fire->Fire->Fire or Fire->Fire->Light as part of one branching pathway, but in Torna you can only do the latter if you start a blade combo with Fire and continue it with Fire.

I tried that, but even with the Gold Noppon Mask Tora with double tank poppi was losing aggro every now and then, and with the item that "starts fight with major aggro", Morag could only hold aggro for a little bit, but once the Arts Recovery kicked in she had basically no way to get it back off of Rex unless I swapped off to Perun.
So it's better not to go with a more dedicated setup and to instead give everybody their own sources of healing then?
I've been trying to figure out a way to bring Morag "up to par" with Tora (I just got QTpi though, so Tora's 9999 hp might have made that a pointless exercise in playing "optimally'), but since I only had one Gold Noppon Mask I didn't want to swap that around whenever I felt like changing tank I've been seeing what other options she had.
Is there any disadvantage to spamming arts with Rex as long as I'm careful not to draw too much aggro? Is there a reasonable benefit to using auto-attacks instead? I haven't checked the numbers, but it seems even with Perun's +90% auto-attack damage and >50% crit rate and giving Rex a strength up and auto attack up, the difference in damage still seems pretty solidly to Mythra's advantage, as well as producing a bunch of potions to heal the party rather than just Rex thanks to the Vampiric lance.

Shulk had, until the Fioraning, been gradually warming to Melia and opening up. Then Fiora came back and he became utterly obsessed with her and shut out Melia entirely.
I mean, I don't even blame him. Don't get me wrong. If someone you'd been friends with your entire life suddenly appears after you thought they had died, you'd probably give all your attention to that as well.
My only issue was that bringing her back after the way she had died just seemed like the worst sort of plot twist. Hack writing taken to the Nth level. The sort of shit plot development even western comics would be ashamed to use.

Oh please, Faced Mechons being Homs was obvious from the start and actually had interesting repercussions on the lore and the plot, the only reason you consider Fiora coming back as hack writing is because you're an eternally anal anguished scorned waifufag mad "his girl" didn't win the Shulkbowl even though the only "warming up" Shulk did to Melia in the time between meeting her and finding out Fiora is alive is going from considering her as that weird stranger they just saved to considering her a friend and it was obvious their relationship wouldn't move much pass that as far as he was concerned. Shulk never had romantic feelings for Melia and probably would have gently turned her down and friendzone had she ever actually had the balls to confess before Fiora's return (which she didn't, and she probably would have waited 20 years to do it because she's an 80 years old virgin)

Poppi Alpha wants a Master Tank Mod, block rate up, ultimate shield, and a Dilaton Chip. That gives you 50% / 40% defenses, 93% block rate, and a 50% chance for damage immunity. She's unkillable.
QTpi wants Moon Matter Chip, Master Tank/Evasion/Strike Mod, Pinpoint Weakness, Critical Restore 1, etc. I personally like teamheal on her level 1 special, makes her a crazy good healer. Vital Charge on her level 2 special for chain attack damage, then just give her damage boosts like Affinity Max Attack, Challenger, Frontal Force.
QTpi's arts should be Speedy Sword, Swooshing Slash, and Steady Beam (AOE self heal art). Boom-boom Laser sucks.
QTpi can do pretty much anything. Customize her prior to each fight, give her the element that's super effective against whatever you're fighting (easy in some cases, harder in others). She can be one of the strongest attackers in the game, a powerful healer, or a perfect dodge tank. Triple Master Evasion Mods plus agility-boosting stuff lets her tank while still dealing huge damage and crit-healing + teamhealing.

Dedicated tanking kinda falls off lategame for a few reasons. One, your attackers get so powerful that their aggro generation is way higher than any tank. Second, crit heals become a far more reliable way to sustain your team, as you don't have to worry so much about who has aggro when everyone has constant burst heals. Third, evasion setups (i.e. evasion Poppi QTpi with Mythra Foresight and Shulk Monado Speed support) are much safer than tanking damage.
Evasion Mythra is much better than critheal Mythra. Give Rex two agility mod commons with agility-boosting chips, Ester Shoes/Dauntless Boots, and Evasion Focus for Mythra. You can still spam Double Spinning Edge, Sword Bash, and Lightning Buster for big damage, and you'll get the 150% bonus damage at low health more often too.
