The conflict exists because one group wants a fundamental change to Western society that would make it worse. It isn't a "hollow division", it's a division about the basic rules that underlie our entire society. To say that this division doesn't matter and it's just a means of control is pretty reductive and IMO wrong.

Looking back across the history of the American Democrats, they are constantly flipping on what exactly they stand for (in the public eye) on virtually every topic, but the reality is they don't give a fuck about any of it. They only take whatever stance they need in the short term while they take the time to implement underhanded shit that effectively allows them to maintain their desired status quo that should give them the edge in maintaining power. Democrats were the pro-slavery party, but once the reds got slavery abolished, the blues turned it around and sought to create the next best thing to slavery - welfare granted based on child count.
What better way to gain power than to keep an entire race of people in slums and pumping out future voters, all of whom will continue to vote for you due to the excess amount of an artificial violent "culture", propaganda and free money they get? Democrats since the 70s have been getting away with slavery in plain sight, they just call it something different.
Democrats were VERY recently pro-border security because they looked at legally migrating Puerto Rican immigrants who were overwhelmingly voting Republican. They took their time with that front through the 90s and 00s while pushing legislation which would "protect" and lead Mexican illegals into voting blue. Now open borders are no problem, bring in more "undocumented immigrants" as they can now vote.
