If it's your first SMT I'd suggest something shorter like Devil Survivor OC to see if you like the general loop of get demon > level demon > fuse demon. Your first run of SMT4 can take a while.
Just get the Neutral ending, as 4A takes place before Flynn finishes that route.

It's basically modern JRPG perfection but on an exceptionally shitty system. Console wars aside there's no way anyone can find the 3DS comfortable.
But the game feels like an evolution of turn based combat without turning real time like so many other franchises. It's very fast paced, challenging on rewards correct decision making. It also doesn't instant game over you when you go down the wrong corridor and get absolute fucked up.
