iirc sakurai basically just said they needed to be able to warp, so yeah, there are multiple characters. it was obviously just sakurai bias that led to it being kirby.

Bayonetta honestly is the strongest member power level wise so definitely at least her.

Sakurai got asked that and admitted himself that there were like three or four characters that could've escaped.
I only remember Bayo being one of them, but he wanted a simple character to be the starter and Kirby fit that bill the best of the possible options.
It's probably why Mario wasn't the sole survivor and you just get him immediately instead.
Even though they wanted him playable from the start, he can only jump so far.

bayonetta is the one people always mention but I like that they show she was a bit off her game that day, doing bat within rather than a real witch time dodge

Sakurai himself clarified that Bayo and Palutena were the other ones that most likely would have been able to escape, but that still leaves out characters like Rosalina or Super Sonic that should be able to teleport/travel through space at a whim.

Also, unless I'm mistaken, has the Warp Star ever really allowed Kirby to teleport? I get that "Warp" is in the name but it's usually seen just flying him directly to his destination.

Kirby is a very basic character that kiddos won't have any problem playing as.

Ness if it were post magicant very likely. Mewtwo is also literally a Giegue clone (missed echo fighter opportunity) but I don't think he can pull anything like that off.

Given that Echo Fighters can be hid behind their base character on the select screen, I really don't think they'd ever have Echo Fighters from different series than their base character.
