The optimal way to play the game is to spam the most broken burst art available and nothing else. Doing regular combos or step attacks serve no purpose.

Main thing you should be doing is finding a weapon you like. You won't be able to really build up your equipment set until much later in the story. Something else to be mindful of is your shield determines your defense rating, if you're getting hit hard by enemies, upgrade it.

Weapons having only a single passive boost that only triggers in burst state while the rest being empty slots you have to slap passives onto yourself makes upgrading more boring than in previous games, it was fun seeing what kind of passives certain weapon trees could get.

Pick a weapon that seems cool, find the burst arts you like, hit things until they die

Also your shield is your defense stat even if you don’t block

just try whatever you like, as long as you don't completely ignore elemental weaknesses and use guns, upgrade your equipment and such

Play either Buster or Variant Scythe. Both are easy as fuck to learn and have great BAs

While in Burst, whatever BA you assigned to your moveset will replace its default version. There is nothing random about them, you just need to know which move you replaced.

Some BAs change your default combos, only the last move in your heavy combo, or your weapon's special action.
