It's also worth noting that, at the beginning of German-Soviet War (I don't know what battle the picture is from exactly, but presumably from earlier stages of the war), while Soviets obviously had more manpower overall, Germans tended to achieve LOCAL superiority in numbers (and more so in fighting power), which is a really big deal when Lanchester's square law can be applied.

Like front-level command fuckup of the unseen proportions. Border patrol fought germans off successefully for some time, as did forces at Danube which actually pushed back and took some ground beyond the border. Soviet navy didn't sit with its arms up its ass and was combat-ready since June 19, which allowed them to BTFO german bombers at June 22 and strike the bases at Romania immediately after. But that didn't matter because of the encirclements.
