Splatoon 2 is still so popular and active even two years after release. I wouldn't be surprised if they injected this very cute, often funny game with another expansion. They have such a big and loyal playerbase, it would be foolish of them to let it go to waste.

This. I have kind of been expecting this to be announced too.
I kind of doubt they'll announce a Splatoon 3 for the Switch instead of making Splatoon 3 for the Switch's successor. But I also doubt they'd leave Splatoon unattended until then.
No way they'll just stop with the Splatfests and leave Splatoon 2 without support until we get Splatoon 3 on the next system. No way.
Splatoon is a mega hit and I am sure Nintendo are hungry to invest in it.
It's probably getting both another expansion, and spin-off of some kind.

Yeah. People like to point at the way they handled Splatoon 1, but the real reason they stopped supporting that game is because Wii U was a dead console and they had to move on. I wouldn't take anything Nintendo did on Wii U as representative of how they're going to handle the Switch. The only weak point in Splatoon 2 is that they for some reason refuse to implement cloud saving, when it is basically THE game that would benefit the most from it. Surely they can figure out a way to do it that wouldn't result in cheating.

We'll have to wait and see. The final splatfest will most likely happen some time during July, I really see no reason to stop after the initial two years, considering the sales numbers and passionate community, cutting support would seem like a pretty dumb move at this point.

I wonder. Traditionally Nintendo would just do 1 splatoon in a generation and the team would go on to make a different game. But now people expect multiplayer games to be constantly worked on.
I suspect by splat 3 on the switch 2 they'll go balls-deep in the GaaS or seasonal model and support it until the next game. But I'm not sure what they'll do with splatoon 2.
