This is the first time I recall experiencing fear in a game

This is the first time I recall experiencing fear in a game.
When I was a child, the cemetary in Link's Awakening really chilled me. Seing these decaying corpses endlessly rise from the ground and awkwardly pursue me before sinking back into the graveyard gave nightmares to my little 5 year old mind. The trees with faces near the witch's hut filled me with dread because I knew that meant I was close to the graveyard, and seeing the corpses walking down the southern graveyard path from Ukuku Prairie surprised me and caused me to nope away every time. I was terrified aylt the idea of entering a grave for a dungeon, which my friend Cole told me was a dark sidescrolling section that was full of pig-like enemies that ran back and forth all just said "Go away!" when touched, followed by a row of coffins with a hand that would pull you into one of them and then throw your bones out and delete your save. Obviously not true now, but back then neither of us had the DX version so how could I know? Shit inspired feelings in me, it really inspired our imagination. We had similar ideas about what happened if you continuously stole from the shopkeeper, that he'd eventually lose it even more than he really does and you'd end up permadead. I'm not saying the new artstyle is bad, or that LA is meant to be dark, but the game's surreal setting and the haunting nature of the game will probably be lost to children of today with the toylike aesthetic. As an adult, I still find aspects of LA haunting, and completing the game made me downright sad after the southern shrine. I like the new artstyle, I just think it would have fit another Zelds title better. Not Link's Awakening, I just feel like it doesn't capture the same feeling.

>td;dr whining about the artstyle because muh nostalgia

it doesn't change anything user, wanting a remake of link's awakening would have already been a lost cause if it pandered to you, it's just an excuse to make another zelda game without putting in the effort

faggot

pussy

I had ultimate mortal kombat 3 when I was 3 because my older brother bought it for me and i somehow figured out how to unlock the supreme demonstration by going to tournament mode with 2 controllers and watching all of the fatalities. and I didn't get scared at all and cried when my mom saw it and threw it away. beat that faggots.

Nice novel you’ve written here, OP.

Double faggot

Double pussy faggot

What a completely useless and jaded reply. I'm not whining about the artstyle at any point here, I'm not even saying it's bad. I'm allowed not to prefer it and I'm perfectly valid in talking about why, just like you're allowed to love it and you're valid in describing yoyr reasons for that.

>I like the new artstyle, I just think it would have fit another Zelds title better. Not Link's Awakening, I just feel like it doesn't capture the same feeling.

Don't give a fuck, but here's my first time being scared playing games.
>playing OoT that I rented, can't even get past the first dungeon because I am too retarded to know how to shoot the ladder to make it fall down
>go to another save file and are able to walk around Hyrule as a child, go to Hyrule Castle Town, hang out in the fields, etc
>don't know what to do so try the last save file
>I'm an adult now
>interesting
>go outside and the whole world is dark
>get a creeping fear come over me
>go into town and find a shit ton of ReDeads
>interpret them as zombies, the corpses of the people who once lived here
>run away, horrified, have no idea what happened
>try to return to Kokiri Village because I'm scared that they aren't safe
>somehow end up going towards Gerudo
>see that the bridge is out
>somehow interpret this as a corruption of the Kokiri area (since when you leave there's a tiny bridge) and horrified, thinking 'I can't go back to my childhood home'
>shut off the game, traumatized
>think for years that the adult section of OoT is just extremely dark and depressing, with the player totally incapable of returning to Kokiri Village and the Castle Town filled with the corpses of the happy townspeople who once lived there

Well, LA is one of those games for me. It's always meant a lot to me so I could probably go on about it for a while yet.

I'm so sick of this sappy bullshit that gets posted every day.

Link's Awakening wasn't a dark game. It wasn't meant to be a dark game. Nintendo isn't going to design the game based on your bullshit childhood memories. Nintendo is making the most faithful remake possible based on how actually cheery and bright the original game was, even in black and white. You are not entitled to anything else. Don't buy the game and stop bitching on this board.

ABSOLUTELY based.

Smash Ultimate is a port.

But I soon put a stop to that in my remake by removing the cemetary *raughs*

That's what they are, user. The guide describes it as the city of the dead and redeads in OoT are described in the instruction manual and straegy guide as decomposing corpses, no matter what smash 4 or melee says.

Funnily enough, there are no Hyrule Guards left at all when you're an adult, save for the poe collector.

Omg op this is an epic thread about your tender widdle heart at age 5 getting scared at a baby game. Smash Ultimate is a port.

FUNKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

once i played super smash bros ultimate and i saw incenroar and it made me really scared because it reminded me of my dad that beat me then i saw a squirtle and SCREAMED because it was way too big for a turtle and i shit my pants every day for the rest of my life and cried

Most of the important people from Hyrule Castle Town bailed and went to Kakariko. I would have felt better had I visited Kakariko and seen that the some of them escaped. In my mind, EVERYONE was dead, and the world was basically just evil, zombies, and Link with no other survivors.

>I'm not saying Link's Awakening was meant to be dark

>REEEE LINK'S AWAKENING ISN'T MEANT TO BE DARK STOP BITCHING HOW DARE YOU

For the record, the fact that Koholint is such a lovely place is a big part of why I find the game to be sad.

I remember once when I played mario when i was 1 years old I got really scared because I thought all the goombas were gay dead people and I was scared because I'm gay

As a kid I really liked link's awakening

I'm genuinely offended by what nintendo is doing to it now. It looks like a fucking hipster phone game. MM is nothing compared to this

Hell yes they do, but sprites like that leave a lot to the imagination and they way they move really sold them for me.

Marin was my first vidya girlfriend. I wish I could go back and tell the old (young) me that I would see her again some day. In fact it happened even sooner with Hyrule Warriors which I still need to play if just to say 'hi' to her again.

Hey now, why are we taking potshots at MM alluvasudden?

If anything those games go hand-in-hand as the surrealist's Zelda games.

Good. Fucking suffer like me seeing every release of Smash Bros after Melee and having it be complete fucking shitty retard shit and having FUCKING ignorant newfag retards try to defend it who don't know SHIT!!! Soon Nintendo will make everyone fucking pissed off by fucking up every single franchise, it's already happening. I don't think they can fuck up Animal Crossing but I wouldn't be surprised at all if they did after seeing all the fucking garbage they've been releasing for years. I hope it's fucking complete fucking retard garbage so you feel what I felt for every Smash Bros release after Melee.

Fuck, yeah that specific chain of experiences really does sound dreadful user. How long did it take you to come back to the game? Were you hesitant to continue after the child section ended?

>why are we taking potshots at MM alluvasudden?
We aren't. I also loved MM as a kid. The Goron area in spring is the pure definition of comf. But the remake made it worse.

But that was just a slight tweaking. Compare that to this absolute fuckery.

What the fuck makes you think I didn't play smash 64 and melee? I barely touched brawl/4/ultimate in comparison.

I don't think I ever rented it again. Didn't really play it until like 5 years later in 2007 when someone gave me my first GameCube and it came with the Zelda disc that had 1, 2, OoT and the unplayable version of MM because it constantly crashed. By that point, I was competent to actually play the game and realize I was wrong.

>Director Takashi Tezuka said that the game's "freewheeling" development made Link's Awakening seem like a parody of The Legend of Zelda series.[18] Certain characters in the game break the fourth wall; for example, little children inform the player of game mechanics such as saving, but admit that they do not understand the advice they are giving.[20]

the entire game is a parody because it's a dream, if you complain about the artstyle it just shows you didn't understand anything about the game.

Same but with Zelda OOT when its night and the skellys appear. Mostly because my dad was sleeping in the morning so he was making me play with headphones on and it was scary af. Replaying it, its kind of a joke how non-threatening the enemies actually are.

Dude, this isn't even the sad spooky part.
The sad spooky part is the ghost that lives in the abandoned house at the beach, who doesn't realize its passed away.

That got me later, when I was old enough to play competently.

Here's an ideafact:

There was absolutely nothing intrinsecally creepy or unnerving about Link's Awakening's visuals. It looked blatantly lighthearted and goofy, both because of technical limitations and because it was appropriate and fitting for a whimsical adventure game on the gameboy. Any tone shift or subtext you might find to how the game looks came from the writing itself recontextualizing the visuals and your own imagination arbitrarily magnifying and diminishing whichever aspect of the game seemed more interesting.

If anything, the new artstyle will make the contrast with the writing more glaring and effective, which is the source of the original game's atmosphere, and not any promo art for the game that fits your headcanon.

Attached: oldcontemptdude.jpg (511x471, 152K)

Here's a fact: it the new art looks stupid.

It belongs in a low budget spinoff mobile game that nobody is going to play, not in a remake.

"I don't personally like it, thus it looks like a mobile game"

Woah dude skeletons. That's CREEPY
youtube.com/watch?v=K2rwxs1gH9w

In all seriousness, what makes you think the new one won't have some goofy ass skelletons in some dungeon? You're just assuming things here. And if they were you would still find reasons to dislike it so whatever.

>a dopey looking enemy ruins an entire game's art direction

No.
Honestly, even that enemy and the way that it moves is bizarre and offputting.

>literally a goofy cartoon boss
>frame it "bizarre and offputting" so it can fit your narrative

You missed your true calling as a child soldier in the DRC

>a dopey looking enemy
>as in SINGLE

They were all extremely dopey as far as the visuals go.

>Honestly, even that enemy and the way that it moves is bizarre and offputting.

How unselfaware can you guys be. Finding that pink guy """creepy""" in any way has more to do with your mind wanting to see it that way for the reasons I already adressed.

How is this creepy at all? Why do you assume this won't happen in the new game aswell, when it's such an iconic thing about the game?

You're the one creating a strawman and turning a discussion into an argument. You made the bold statement that LA has no unnerving visuals, I posted an unnerving screenshot frok the first dungeon. No, Skeletons are not inherently creepy. Stalfos aren't scary enemies. You need to apply context to this shit.

The context in which you find those skeletons is eerie. They're hanging by their necks and they're not enemies or anything. They're just there, heavily decayed, and they're very detailed compared to most things in the game. At one point they were people who were brought to Tail Cave and hung there until the died, and it's eerie. No xylophone is going to refute that.

>How is this creepy at all?
How is the happy mask salesman creepy at all?

I 100% agree with this. I beat LA for the first time last week. Loved it, now my second favorite 2D zelda, but it's not really dark and creepy. It's a cute whimsical adventure. I think most people are just influenced by what their childhood imaginations remember about the game.

Because he actually has personality

I still don't want my cute and whimsical adventure to look like fucking funko pop.

And the nightmare is not cute and whimsical at all.

It's cute, but melancholic. Like nostalgia for an old failed relationship you dwell on for years.

And I insist you're assuming the new game won't feature them. Effectively, it's the context what matters, and the context is the same for both the original and the new game for all we know. And again, if it featured them, would you be satisfied? Would the game have appropriate visuals if that was the case? Because I don't think that's what you guys find bothering.

I'm not trying to force it into any narrative. There's nothing wrong or false about calling that thing bizarre and offputting, and in the same breath I called it dopey looking. Nothing about being bizarre and offputting is incompatible with being goofy, I never called him """creepy""" and you're taking pieces of my point and making up arguments from them that I never made so you have something to argue against. Jesus Christ.

Attached: 1547262444969.jpg (699x699, 29K)

youtube.com/watch?v=aG-oxjFYtA4

I don't know where you got that assumption from me but you have no basis to insist on it. Have my doubts thay the new artstyle will portray them as effectively, if anything.

>pretends a literal silly cartoon monster in a game intended for small children is "bizarre and offputting" to fit your narrative
Not a good look my friend

Not a good look, friend

Venom from Spiderman, Voldo from Soul Blade, The Mummy from The Mummy (1999)
My childhood fears I ended up loving as an adult.

Oh and the bunny from Bill n Ted Bogus Journey when its chasing them down a hallway out of hell.
Also one of my favourite movies now.

How is creepy not a synonimous for bizarre and offputting? You're just arguing with the meaning of words. And I don't have a beef with you seeing that pink bastard as bizarre and offputting, but it looks just the same in the remake and there's no reason to think it lost any qualities in the process.

The only reasonable criticism I can see there is that the life-like plastic texturing is getting a bit overdone by nintendo at this point, and that you might not personally enjoy it.

Well I'm sorry if I assumed too much. I on the other hand don't think there's much to achieve portraying them since the original was pretty basic about those skeletons and they were just as effective as the rest of the sprites.

Attached: dopeyboss.jpg (375x320, 16K)

This thing always got to me.
They way the bosses talk to you always felt off. Silly, but off. Especially the ones that allude to what will happen if you wake the wind fish.

So does the shopkeep. You're moving goal posts.

>So does the shopkeep. You're moving goal posts.

He's not really moving goalposts. Indeed the guy at the shop has a personality, why would anyone think it will be lost on the remake?

I think the most valid point of this video is his statement about how stating your own opinion and discussing it is constructive, but trying to convince people that their subjective feelings aren't valid because ________ and turning it into an argument is fucking retarded. That user isn't citing the vid as a criticism of the artsyle as much as a criticism of the behavior happening ITT.

I could take or leave the artstyle, honestly I just don't want a tile-for-tile remake. It's not like it's an HD port of a standard def game where they can just throw in a few more collectibles, fix some old jank, and call it a day. A remake is a whole opportunity to reimagine the game. I'd much rather have an abortion of a reimagining than what is essentially a 3D tileset. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions and they're just keeping their cards close but those shots of the dungeon interior and the swamp did not inspire confidence. The worst part is most people don't seem to care about the potential lack of new content since they either don't remember the content very well or haven't played it at all.

Who am I kidding, it's gonna be $60 for 3D tiles and some new secret seashells and I'm gonna buy it.

Attached: 1548678230315.jpg (525x1024, 154K)

>They way the bosses talk to you always felt off. Silly, but off.

Which has nothing to do with visuals. There's no reason to think they won't talk the same way.

Nobody said that, he was posted in response to the claim that Link's Awakening does not feature unnerving visuals.

>pretends a literal silly cartoon monster in a game intended for small children is "bizarre and offputting" to fit your narrative
This ain't it chief

No but the way that fish looks sure as shit has something to do with the visuals.

It's perfectly valid to feel like something is being lost by making the visuals look the way they did.

...

>pretends a literal silly cartoon monster in a game intended for small children is "bizarre and offputting" to fit your narrative
That'll be a yikes from me my man

>It's perfectly valid to feel like something is being lost by making the visuals look the way they did.
Based on this thread, evidently the thing being lost is just the game being 8-bit and children filling in the blanks in their mind. What a novel concept, games are less interpret-able as the graphics improve. Is that the point you've been trying to make this entire time? Is that really it? This needed a thread?

>instead of taking 8-bit and filling in the gaps, nintendo takes 8-bit and blows it up to funko so that it looks fucking terrible and no longer has any gaps to fill

That fish is very detailed, there's little to be filled in there. But the remake is likely to make it look like a roblox model. It's a huge tonal shift. Don't be dense.

>But the remake is likely to make it look like a roblox model. It's a huge tonal shift.
You're literally bitching about something you know nothing about. Wait until we actually see the fish and then complain, you fucking idiot.
>funko
Good meme

Have you guys never had a dream before? Because they aren't, y'know, realistic. That's kinda the whole thing about them.

That's literally what link looks like. A fucking funko hipster toy. And if seeing this artstyle excites you then you probably own ten.

you have plastic dreams?

>people bitch and whine and complain about a game they aren't going to play anyway
What's the point? You've obviously already made up your mind. Are you like, trying to convince other people to also dislike it? What's your endgame here? What do you want?

Attached: 1542728759552.png (203x254, 96K)

>And if seeing this artstyle excites you then you probably own ten.
Please point out where I said that the artstyle excites me. I'll wait.

>stating your own opinion and discussing it is constructive

Which I did. The first reply I got was "well it looks stupid". Again it's perfectly fine to not particularly enjoy the new artstyle, but to pretend those subjective feelings come from rational processes and that the new artstyle is obviously just wrong is moronic, when it has more to do with nostalgia than actual merit of cunning of the devs from back then (which had plenty).

>A remake is a whole opportunity to reimagine the game.
To reimagine the game in a satisfactory way would be waaaay more work than what they're people are capable of right now. Zelda team is always making new games, so I'd rather have them do that and I'll take this from a B team in the meantime. If it should cost $60 that's a different argument, but I will probably enjoy it more than some games that were more expensive to produce and that cost the same.

>But the remake is likely to make it look like a roblox model. It's a huge tonal shift.

You're both assuming stuff before seeing it and completely unselfaware of your own subjective feelings. To call the new artstyle a "huge" tonal shift means you're completely out of it.

>It's perfectly valid to feel like something is being lost by making the visuals look the way they did.

Something would be lost no matter which style they chose to remake the game. Even if you have a new ideal style that appeals to you in your head, that would also miss some of the original sprite qualities.

I never said you did, you low IQ piece of shit. It's a conditional. So what does it do for you? Make you feel nothing? Gee, that's great of a new game to do. I can't wait to buy this game whose artstyle makes me feel absolutely nothing at all.

>So what does it do for you? Make you feel nothing? Gee, that's great of a new game to do. I can't wait to buy this game whose artstyle makes me feel absolutely nothing at all.

I just want to point out that I wrote a number of but not all of the posts you've been replying to and I never once called anything stupid. Remember that you're not talking to one person.

Then what does it do for you, you worthless piece of shit? Tell me. What does it do?

It doesn't excite you. It doesn't do nothing for you. Stop complaining about what I'm conditionally saying about how you feel about it and tell me what it does. You absolute piece of reddit trash.

Because it should excite. It should make people think it's cool. It should make people who played the original want to play it, and view it as an improvement. It does none of those things.

>What else in the world should have they gone with instead
Literally anything else would be better than this. Don't compare leaving out detail because of technical limitations to a full-scale plastic piece of funko shit.

Does it hurt to construct all those strawmen?

You still didn't tell me a thing. You're fucking pathetic.

Uh oh we have another sperg out on aisle 6.

I know it probably wasn't you, but I don't think i'm displaying any kind of bad "behaviour". I'm discussing with arguments, as opposed to the first reply I got.

>jump down someone's throat when they did pretty much nothing
>demand them answer your strawmanned questions
Is this what all anti-remake people are like?

You're worthless.

>having fear of the cemetary
>while walking mother fucking chompsky

>Literally anything else would be better than this.
You don't have a clue there. The game looked like that because of technical limitations, which shaped the gameplay to the game it still is as today.

If you revamp the game's visuals without those technical limitations, you'd think you're off the hook to go crazy but you're not, because there's an established gameplay you need to adapt the new visuals to, which is a tile-based top down view game, which is very limiting as far as detailed graphics go. It affects the proportions of the characters, the amount of screen that will be shown at any time, the amount of detail that can be appreciated. So I'd like to see what you had in mind with those contour conditions in account.

Attached: testicular torsion.png (435x157, 95K)

I only wrote and I dunno if you're assuming I wrote some others or just missquoted but obviously I'm not gonna be trying to take up some other anons points.

With that said, 1. if they can't put in the proper resources to remake the game internally then they should either shelve it for when they can give it the attention it deserves, or outsource it to a 2nd party dev, and 2. I very much doubt they don't have the internal resources to make a reimagined LA. Maybe the use of the word "reimagined" was what gave you the impression I was thinking of some project on a grand scale, but I'm not even thinking of a reimagining on the scale of Samus Returns. I just don't want *literally* the same game with 3D tiles.

LA was my first Zelda game, and I come back to it often; it's one of my favorite games from my childhood. They cant ruin a game that already exists, and absolutely nothing they do to "reimagine" a remake could ever ruin the original. I know for a fact some others feel otherwise, but I don't. I don't want to solve the same puzzles I've already solved and beat the same enemies I've already beat. When I want to do that I already have Link's Awakening on GB.

Good job user. was worried hillary voters agreed with me.

I missquoted, user. Sorry. The rest of your post I find reasonable. My roomate has the same beef with it. But nintendo is weird about outsourcing games and they probably wouldn't let anyone else touch LA to an important degree. In any case, we're not sure if the game will feature any new content or unexpected twists here and there.

you know sometimes I think the artist behind this is just genuinely skilled and I'm not really interested in the style or design but the execution itself.

>no more feeling of dread that everyone I know will soon age into an unrecognizable self and eventually die

ah good.
Fuck season 3 made feel so uneasy.

I remember seeing one of these fuckers while on an island.
Holy shit are they HUGE too.

I wish they'd do it more often, Minish Cap was great. I'm gonna hold out hope for any significant amount of new content, but even if it's just a shot for shot remake I'll still get it just for the fact that it's one of my childhood-defining games. It'll just be a bit sour for the fact that once they remake the game, that's basically it for any foreseeable future with that title.

Anyway, I'm going to bed. Have a good one, user.

I want to love Oracle of Ages, but man, I've grown a little tired of the GB assets, and I've got Oracle of Seasons coming up when I finish Ages. I definitely enjoy the game, but I'm not sure if Seasons will have the same appeal.

>Woah dude skeletons. That's CREEPY
They were hanged, retard. That's the difference
