I'm not saying I'm great at the game (my win rate is only 10%), but this is my strategy.
My KOs are usually about 6-12. I start on KOs then switch to Attackers mid game or when Im being assaulted and just try to hold out against aggressors.
If you are targeted against by multiple people turn it to your advantage and start clearing lines fast rather than stockpile. The bonus from being targeted heavily makes it worth it.

The playing forever pattern isnt piece efficient and it doesnt work against receiving garbage. Just work on speed for now, the more you play your best, the faster you get over time. Play tetrisfriends or install nullpomino. Make a first goal of beating marathon, then shoot for gradually lowering your 40line sprint time to below 1 minute.
My winrate is 50% it took me probably around 100-200 hours to get 50 second 40L sprint that I use to win.

I got 6th without any sort of T-spin shit or even any real strategy besides clearing fast and going for Tetrises if it won't make me get too much trash to clear safely.
KOs are helpful if you can get them, and if you're confident in how you play trying to get as many people after your ass helps.

I've gotten about 10 wins so far by just setting to Attackers at the start and playing defensively. I don't T-spin, I don't really set up for combos, and I honestly make a bunch of mistakes. But I've managed to pull through just by focusing on surviving until the very end.
All the flashy set ups and speed tricks are nice and all, but focus on getting your core fundamental gameplay down first.

You can stack as nicely as you want with your own pieces but sooner or later you're going to receive random garbage, and if you don't clear it quickly and cleanly you will not survive
Singleplayer modes don't teach you this so play AI or other players
