Tales of Berseria

Why was this game so divisive? What did it do right? What went wrong?

Didn't have /ss/

>What went wrong?
nothing it was a decent game

It would have been quite nice if it had more of that, yeah. What other games have /ss/ besides near a tomato?

It totally did though, they just didn't fug

>Right
Good character dynamics. Interesting story premise (play as unapologetic bad guys). Fixed the Overworld Combat issue by having them snap to prelared arenas instead of drawing a circle wherever they were. Fun combat system with flashy moves and better party use than zesti. Lots of VO and animations
>Wrong
Item system is still shit. Combat gets ez mode as velvet. Kamoana. Dungeons weren't great.

it starts extremely well storywise
last third of the game is extremely boring and forgettable
gameplay is lame as every tales game ever

Kid Icarus: Uprising

Kamoana was the fucking worst

Gameplay wise I really liked it, enjoyed other corridor JRPGs before this and the combat is miles ahead of them. Annoyed you have to play it for literal hours and fight optional bosses just to unlock what should by rights be basic fucking features of it, I can live
Plotwise it lost me shortly after the prologue. I was down for an edgy jrpg, it looked like it was going that way, then it turned into typical anime bullshit almost immediately. The constant implication that this typical anime bullshit really is edgy because MC comes across as a meanie was just salt in the wound

It was a great game.
Things it did wrong though:
>Velvet and Phi didn't kiss or even fucking hug.
>It's connected to Zestiria.
>Some of the mechanics you only unlock by killing optional bosses which is a huge drawback and it's also why people think the combat sucks sometimes.
>No "regular attack" button that doesn't use souls.
Regular attacks are very important and they shouldn't have abandoned them for "only artes" style attacks. I like using all four face buttons for attacks, but one of them should have been weak regular attacks for when a boss fucks you with 7 status effects and you have only one soul left.

>What did it do right?
Velvet before Laphicet.
>What went wrong?
Velvet after Laphicet, the combat, and especially the dungeons.

>Annoyed you have to play it for literal hours and fight optional bosses just to unlock what should by rights be basic fucking features of it,
Seriously, this. Also getting that item that makes it so it doubles the items you get from breaking down equipment makes the upgrading system 100x better and literally encourages upgrading at every opportunity you get, making the game far more fun because the mechanics you unlock via upgrades (half SC usage, more BG, more souls to start with and max souls) are hugely important.

1) The combat was very difficult to learn and doesn't have nearly as much depth as the old systems that it was replacing
2) at least three-quarters of the plot relevant cutscenes were skits or anime cutscenes instead of being rendered in-game, which creates lots of disconnects from the game when you change costumes as well as made the overall game not show off its pretty models
3) They replaced dungeons with ff13 hallways filled with grind and stupid sonic rings
4) Nearly all of the costumes and alternate looks from previous games that gave you a sense of visual progression were removed and made DLC that even worse didn't blend into the game at all; it was all idolshit shovelware tier, might as well be importing Tera armor mods into Skyrim for how awful they stood out in the game and all of them were horrifically overpriced and felt like they were taking advantage of a problem that they created by not having any decent costumes in the game in the first place
5) In terms of zones the game has very, very few zones. While they are more open, there's what? Half as many assets as previous games? Looks like a very low-budget game in comparison to older games.
6) Post-game is very bad and extremely short compared to other Tales games
7) The super simple and mechanically 2-dimensional combat of the game makes New Game+ pretty much pointless, because you won't be playing the game any differently than before, whereas games like Vesperia or Abyss and even Symphonia would allow you to use multiple new mechanics, supers, combo links, knock downs, throws, aerials, and other cool shit that you'd have accumulated in your arsenal by the end of New Game. Berseria has none of these things so combat remains exactly the same through nearly the entire game, and what you gain by the end isn't different enough from what you had at the start to make it worth doing again.

I actually really liked this game, but its got a massive host of issues that shouldn't have been there.

velvet changed my mind on female MCs

Do you happen to have any /ss/ ones?

The NG+ worth it? I just finished EX dungeon and black turtle side quest which, I don't feel like playing the NG+.
I'm ready to move on to the new ToV version.

Tales was never good.

Not really.

>it's also why people think the combat sucks sometimes
The combat sucks because its so broken with velvet.

Either I'm a fucking scrub or it's not easy to use your 2nd and 3rd mystic artes in this game. I remember when they made it all so easy in past Tales games. Otherwise, I don't really like the combat and it was a decent game but that was just it. Loved Laphi's development and how he punched God.

Doesn't really have any replayability though

Japan can't do stories anymore

Everything is either too hamfisted or too juvenile, sometimes both

Kill yourself

I started it but quit early on thanks to a move and never really picked it back up; imo it's pretty fun, especially if you're like me and take a while to get through most games and so forget some of the finer details of what happened near the start. Does it drastically change the play experience? Nah. Does it shift things just enough to keep the gameplay interesting if you were already invested in the story? Hell yeah.

As much as I loved Berseria, I never did a NG+ until just recently. I don't think there's anything exclusive to NG+ though, but this is when you start going ham with costumes and attachments because fuck cutscene atmosphere.

It's okay. Thank you for this one, I like it!

not him but I don't see how you could continuously up the difficulties that unlock WITHOUT maining velvet. enemy generics near one-shotting anyone they cast spells on is hard to keep up with unless you're nigh invincible
