The overall story is dynamite but ARR is unfortunately rather dull on the whole; it picks up in terms of story immediately after the Ultima Weapon at lv. 50, which marks the end of base ARR. Heavensward is regarded as the greatest of the current three expansions in terms of story, Stormblood is lower on the totem pole but still higher than ARR. and is leading up to something that looks like it'll be just as good as HW.

Garlemald is like a fusion of VI and VII tech. Leaning heavier to VI in aesthetics but still has things like Guard Scorpion and the Ultima Weapon.

Allag is more like III + XIII, they're the ones that always get stuff like the Dreadnought.

They keep all the different tech looks pretty consistent for their origins in XIV, so if we ever get the rest of the Weapon battles from VII, I imagine they'll be associated with Garlemald.

You're missing the point of a sub fee and an economic model based on base profits required. Subscription fees exist to guarantee a fixed income for a game to pay developer salaries and ensure stock holders get dividends that make them happy to keep their money invested in the company.

You're being childish about the whole situation because you made a massive fuck up by paying too much up front and think it's antiquated. I won't deny that it would be nice if there was no subscription fee, but at least I understand why it exists in the first place. I also will admit that the cash shop is one reason I don't play this game anymore because the above reasons for 14 in particular are skewed out of the player's benefit. But that's not going to magically make your attempt to reason out why you fucked up any less retarded than it was.

Smaller play time subs absolutely would skew the whole system if you allowed people to pay for only a single day at a time, or set hourly rates. Not only would these subscription rates be higher than just paying monthly in the long run to make the mass of smaller transactions worth the added administration headaches, but you would almost certainly also twist the community into some insane min/maxing weirdos about game time on top of stats.

And about F2P games. They float by on the exact same point of a standard monthly sub fee. Whales subsidize the people who pay little into the system. It's just a lot more lopsided. And that just means the people who pay more get their voice on the game's direction given more weight because they actually pay. It rarely pans out well in the long run, if the game even stays profitable in the long run.

If you are use DF or PF, or even chat, then when you play on non-meta job t is DISRESPECT to others.

Next you're claiming that the subscription model in general is a bad model because if you pay for the base game and expansions you should be free to play the game as is without paying extra just to access it. But the game is designed and marketed to the consumer and stockholders as a constant service. You pay the fees monthly to cover the day-to-day of developing patches, keeping support working, ensuring the game doesn't crash, marketing, and paying to shareholders so the company keeps happy. The cost of the game and expansions are for the fact they are physical discs (just because digital exists doesn't make the demand for parity across pricing magically stop existing), PS licensing fees, and the extra development time for new maps, jobs, balancing because of a new combat system every expansion, etc.

Your case has some merit when you add in the cash shop, but you never claimed to pay into that. Just that it somehow adds to your disdain of sub fees. One could argue it helps further subsidize the game like a F2P model to keep sub fees down over inflation, but I'm more cynical so I know it's SE just being greedy. Hell, they still have a bare minimum dev crew and claim it's very profitable, so again, that's one reason I quit. Shareholders came before the subscribers.

One thing 14 has over a pure F2P model is that subs still matter. Each person pays monthly, so they don't get massively drowned out by people buying cosmetics. It keeps the development focused on all types of players, which is the benefit to the model.

Honestly, 14 is shit because it abuses its players AND devs, not the fees.

The game is very likely to undergo changes to allow the current team to ease back even more if the bosses do that themselves. Just like 11 changed its focus to allow a skeleton crew to keep it running.

BLU had as much work put into it as a full job (there are already two more expansions' worth of skills sketched out and being developed), even if you don't care for it, so we got three jobs. We've got as much to it as we do Heavensward. Why's it cool to say it has less content when that's not the case?

Excellent shift of goalposts; the original statement was "each expansion brings less content" which is not true, Heavensward brought less content compared to ARR in terms of the sheer amount of dungeons but kept all other parities and offered Diadem. ARR has a grand amount of endgame dungeons and Hard dungeons (31 dungeons compared to HW's total 18 and SB's 15, 16 w/ BA) and two more beast-tribes, but otherwise has the same standard of content as Heavensward and Stormblood. DRK is patrician, WAR is unga

WAR will get you accustomed to tanking more easily, but it starts out a bit squishy at the beginning compared to GLD on account of not having a shield. If you're transitioning from a DPS job then WAR is the one you want. DRK takes some more fiddling around than the other two tanks and its kit isn't complete until 70, but can do the job just as well. Ultimately your choice of tank comes down to sheer preference, go DRK if you want AoE capability and spells, go WAR if you want to pretend you're a DPS (but for God's sake learn your defensive options and use them), go PLD if you want to have the most defensive utility and forever be the off-tank.

Yeah that's good to keep in mind too, if you want damage then WAR really won't get you that far ahead. I recommend it as a DPS transitional job primarily because it functions the closest to one of the actual melee DPS jobs on account of the self-buff and burst damage.

WAR's more intuitive, especially earlier on, as well as being simpler. You really just need to watch your TP so you don't spend it all on Overpower during trashpulls.
DRK is the least intuitive of the tanks and doesn't really come together until around the mid 60s. Also you have to press your Dark Arts button a lot and a lot of people don't like that.

You must be really hard pressed to find a group. And can you imagine how hard they have it finding a group that can utilize their slashing vulnerability debuff that they can pretty much sustain indefinitely? Why, Slashing is only the most common fucking damage type, I can't imagine a party composition that would benefit immensely from increasing every enemy's vulnerability to it.

How does this story compare to other RPGs? I'm mainly interested in the story and I heard ARR is a slog but HW is better then most games. Some reviewer said it was like watching an HBO show, which intrigued me.

It's pretty standard fantasy fare. The compelling part of it (if any) is seeing it progress and unfold with each new patch. Some of the characters are alright too.

the other hurdle to get over is that literally every feature of the game is tied to the main story quest progression, you HAVE to do the MSQ's to be able to do anything and the MSQ from the base game to the start of the first expansion are extremely tedious (lots of go to location A, talk to person A, get sent to location B, talk to person B, report back to person A, repeat). It's also during this period (level 1-50) that the combat is at its' worse by far.

if you can stomach the 1-50 journey and you don't find the art style unappealing then you'll likely find enjoyment in the game.

depends, when you're playing are you focused on getting to end game or are you prone to trying out different classes, crafting/gathering, doing side quests etc?

I would say from the beginning of the game to the final MSQ currently implemented, roughly 120 hours of focused play including queue times but much longer if you try out other classes/do optional content
