You don't need to play the first game to understand anything, but it does make you appreciate certain parts a little more.
And the first game is available on the Wii, Wii U eshop, and 3DS. It's pretty easy to emulate, too.

Xenoblade 1 was originally a Wii game.
It got a port on New 3DS, but it's a visual and graphical downgrade (still otherwise solid as far as gameplay is concerned, but if portability is not that important for you, I'd sooner advice you emulating the Wii version on Dolphin, or buying it on the Wii U VC if like me you're one of the ten persons with a Wii U).

You do not NEED to play Xenoblade 1 before 2, both stories are standalone, 2 requires no prior knowledge. At worst you're gonna miss a few callbacks near the ass-end of the game that do not detract from understanding the core plot. Never the less, you SHOULD play Xenoblade 1 on sole the bases that it's a fucking great game and it's easy enough to emulate.

Eryth Sea is one region of Bionis, that is quit stylistically and geometrically distinct from the ones before and beyond it. Yes it also suffers from padding (really, it's my personal least favorite region on Bionis for that fact), but it's followed by Valak which is completely different in themes, tones, enemies, exploration, objectives, etc. You could sea Eryth Sea's series of "activate X things to open Y" as proto-Mechonis, but the ENTIRE MECHONIS beyond fallen arm is like that.

Sure, the bionis had a lot more variety than the mechonis but it also had a significant amount of more areas. I mentioned eryth sea, but in a lot of places it boils down to the type of activities you mentioned. Either that or its simply move forward, fight boss. Im not saying mechonis is perfect or something, just that its areas were also quite distinct aesthetically and geometrically from the rest of the game while pretty much holding to similar exploration trends from other areas of the game as well. Well depending on the amount of time you can put into the game, let's say you no life it, then you also have to factor how much you go in blindly. Finding quests is generally easy as you'd just have to keep looking around every map for an icon to show up, then you'd have to find things that are needed by the quest givers, then you'd have to find the field bosses. Depending on what you consider 100% you'd need every drop too at least once which only certain things drop at times, but it can be easy to get hem because of a combo that exists in the game. Because you'd need to beat every boss to superboss that can take some grinding and planning using eihter your knowledge or just looking it up. You do have to beat the game twice, but since level carries over that is easy. Let's say you go through the first playthrough without doing a whole lot so you can do everything in NG+, the fastest someone has beaten the game is 4 hours and 14 minutes. Though you still need to gather every Blade which works like a gacha system, then NG+ adds more blades you have to find in the gacha system too. You also need all of the Poppi parts and to have played all of the Tiger! Tiger! levels. Some quests in the game take time to finish, even if a guide existed time just needs to pass by. The game doesn't need to be on, I think, but it still takes time. Like I said before one Blade, if you just 100% keep up with her quests without dropping once, takes forever I think on being perfect it can take 23 whole hours to beat her quest. With vanilla you also have to painfully do a trick to level the friendship of all your blades, which amounts to you buying an item to the highest amount then pressing A on them a bunch with that item. There's more but I can't think of everything.

Personally took me 400 hours to 100% the game (all Blades to S rank, all quests at least once, all named monsters killed, all merc missions, NG+ cleared, all of challenge mode at least on Normal) + 40 hours for Torna (cleared all quests twice (NG+)), but I took my sweet time, faffed around looking at the scenery a lot, taking screencaps, walking at times I could have fast travelled, letting my game idle to finish merc missions and whatnot.

I guess it could have taken me longer if I aimed on a full clear in Bringer of Chaos difficulty but honestly I'm not much for hard modes.

Jason Schreier wrote in his review that the game is 200% fanservice with the camera constantly looking for pantyshots. They haven't played the game, but they will look for anything to hate because they don't want to shell out $300 for a second console.

X was good, but the character design was fucking terrible. I get they focused on the mechs, but it's still no excuse for letting the other characters look like aborted dark souls character creations.

I like 2, but my biggest gripe with the game is more on the technical side. The FPS drops are atrocious, and fighting on ledges/confined spaces is shit because of the camera and knockdown mechanics.

I loved all the QOL updates like reserving your bonus XP to use whenever you want instead of being ultra OP early on

With that logic, picking up and using materia in FF7 is completely optional and avoidable. The blades are central to the gameplay and it'd be stupid to just ignore it.
