I haven't played any of the Silent Hill games, but I found this trailer
youtube.com
and I'm fascinated by the tone and atmosphere presented. Do the games deliver on that tone, and is PS2 emulation still the only viable way to play them now?

Play SH2 instead. Seriously, it's such a great game, even for 2019.
Just listen to this user
Sorry, I fucked that up
>Do the games deliver on that tone
I'd say it's close enough, but, you know, spread out across multiple hours of gameplay. In my experience, talking as someone who played the first 3 ones to completion a few years ago, the first one is genuinely terrifying and the second one, while not as scary, doubles down on the atmosphere. You mileage may vary on the other two.
If you can't play them on the original hardware and you can emulate them, I'd suggest you do so. On the other hand, these games do have pc versions....
oh you know what
watch this instead
youtube.com
there's also Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition if you can figure out how to install all of this (or find it on torrent trackers where someone put it all together for you)
Yes, the first 3 are outstanding, and they have amazing soundtracks. Do yourself a favor and play them.
Yeah. They're some of the most atmospheric games ever created. You will need to emulate Silent Hill 1 as it was only ever released on ps1 but 2, 3 and 4 all got pc ports.
The pc port of 2 is not very good however recently modders have fixed the game and made it equal if not better than the original ps2 version. 3 actually had a pretty decent pc port but it doesn't run too well on modern systems without mods. 4 was a fucking dog to get running even back when it was released but mods have fixed them.
Sorry - someone else will have to post the chart.
go for it , sh4 is a very good and interesting game , when i played it i spent days looking for all the lore on the wiki and j really had fun.
Only problem of the game is that the last levels are backtracking
Listen to this guy, 2 is the best of the series and can be played by itself. If you like it enough, afterward play 1 then 3. Depsite what some autists say, play them all through emulators. For SH2 you need to change a few settings, something to do with fmv rendering can't remember. For SH1 play through beetle so you can render at high res
I LOVED SH2, but I've never played the first one, I watched the story on youtube, and it didn't seem like anything too impressive (to be honest, I wasn't able to understand it)
Here's an infographic, my dude. It may be outdated.
I really need OP to reply and tell me they'll play SH2
I can't go to bed otherwise..........
It's quite outdated. Silent Hill 2 has seen a mass of improvements over the last few years. Last I checked they had essentially fixed up 2 to be superior to the Ps2 version but at the time it required you to download multiple mods and they were working on an all-in-one installer. Don't know if they've finished that yet.
nope, it's still like this
I guess they can't make all-in-one installer because of legal reasons?
>never play horror games as a kid because they scary
>MGS2/Majora's Mask was the scariest thing I've ever played
>decide to try SH1 in like 2013
>within 5 minutes the technology is more impressive than 2013 AAA games
>try SH2 some time after
>within 5 minutes its the most immersive game I've played
for real though, SH2 is the most immersive game I've played too
and I played SH2 in 2018 for the first time
>SH4 is the most K I N O
prove me wrong
here's the most updated one I have
SH4 in general doesn't get enough credit for how experimental it was with both the SH formula and game mechanics in general. It's not nearly as tight an experience as the originals but it's certainly a very interesting game in it's own right.
I couldn't bare first person controls in that game
I was playing with a controller on PC though, and maybe it was just broken
I enjoyed it. It's probabaly the one I played the most.
I wish the sound effects and inventory system were better.
>SH4
>experimental in both SH formula and game mechanics in general
It was the same gameplay as the last 3 Silent Hill games. The only "experiment" was the game has a hub.
In my restless dreams, I see that meme. Tuxedo Pepe. You promised you'd dab on jannies again someday. But you never did.
SH threads are the best threads on /v
Props for these
The difference between the low res FMVs and the high res gameplay in SH4 PC is so jarring
I wish someone would use that new computer ai tech to upsize the FMVs
2 > 1 > > > > > 3
this is objectively the correct ranking of the first 3 games
Nah.
Even these infographs are not updated to the latest work that modders have done
For sh2 follow this guide: enhanced.townofsilenthill.com
It's simply the best version of the game. If you can't be bothered doing all this then just emulate the PS2 version.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
Follow the SH2 widescreen fix site's instructions to the teeth, and you should be fine.
For 3 & 4, check the Guide.
If you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
If SH3 runs like shit even on a strong PC, check and lower the Rendering Resolution setting.
SH2-4 do not support Xinput & PS4 gamepads natively. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
There's OK emu-settings for SH1 in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Try the PGXP emulator for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.
>Protips
-Play in the release order.
-Never play below Normal difficulty.
-Replaying them all is recommended.
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting,
-Don't try to kill everything that moves, especially outdoors.
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help.
That works on FMVs? I thought just textures
it was okay but the weapons broke constantly and the backtracking was fucking awful.
if they never put those things in I would love the game like 1-3.
Movie frames are just images man
Oh man, that's great. I've been looking for something to upscalc and reconstruct some old porn vids.
How long does this take to run? Do you need a super computer?
I dunno I never did it
but I'd really like to get involved in updating RE1
Wow that's insane it looks like Code Veronica graphics.
>ghosts
>inventory management
>puzzles that actually make sense in game universe
>hauntings
are these links legit?
this is a common copypasta in SH threads.
Yeah. It's how I downloaded and played the first 3 games
You've never used MEGA before? It's trustworthy. The only downside is that you can't download too much (about 5GB) without hitting your "transfer quota" though this can be bypassed with free VPN's like Windscribe
what is that in the fridge
play 1-3. try 4, but be prepared for disappointment.
