I loved the first game but hated the second. The first game was a light-hearted visual novel. The second game was really unnecessary and went to extremes constantly.

Well the second series. With every spoiler in the second half, it seemed more and more pointless to keep lying.

I almost dropped Mask of Deception because the slice of life dragged its feet so much. In the end I did end up liking it but there was a point where I just got fed up with the fujoshi shit and cooking and nothing happening.

It was important that the princess didn't notice that the person she loved was actually dead, especially in the early stages where she was mentally unstable. Oshtor was pretty much mandatory for rebuilding the capital aswell, while haku was pretty much useless as a person for anyone.

There's 3 games. The first one was an eroge on PC and it came out in 2002. It was quite influential for it's time, but today you might not enjoy the story as much. The sequels are basically 2 parts of one big story. They all have some SoL stuff, but the meat of the bone is civil war usually. The gameplay improves from game to game, there are some challenge missions and post game that you can do, but I'd say the third one definetly has the best gameplay of them all.

It's not a game purely to play for feel good times, no. Although it does wind up very heartwarming.
