This is on sale, is it good? How does it compare to Xcom?

It's pretty good, way better than it has any right to be, never played X-Com but it's probably easier than it.
>is it good?
yes, especially at that price
>How does it compare to Xcom?
fundamentals and UI style are extremely similar, but in practice I'd say it feels more puzzle-like than strategic, due to its movement system (i.e. being able to bounce off of teammates and what that means for the stage design/positioning); probably easiest to describe it as dumbed-down xcom but I'm not sure that's an entirely accurate descriptor as certain aspects are more fleshed-out than xcom as it's a different approach.
I just played X-COM 2 a couple weeks ago and loved it, gonna pick this up tonight.
Definitely worth it for a lower price, $60 might seem much to try a different style of genre and the chance of not liking it, but it definitely is a game changer. Don't worry about the Rabbids, they're tamer this time around, you're probably even going to find them amusing at some points.
Don't think too much about it, they're Looney Tunes-esque in this venture.
How is the progression in this game?
Linear mission?
Are there leveling up, or unlocking new abilities?
I read that there's a massive difficulty spike near the end that pissed off some people, but other than that the reviews are very good.
linear progression through 4 world, each world is divided into chapters and has a mid-boss around the halfway mark and main boss at the end of each world. You can revisit past worlds for extra challenges (some of these challenges are ridiculously difficult) and a secret bonus chapter as well exists in each world.
Levelling up allows you to pick passive upgrade type stuff, which you can reset at any point to change your options. Your main abilities though are fixed, though characters are unlocked gradually and the abilities take a (brief) time to unlock as well iirc.
I'd say the main game was fairly easy, though it does definitely try to challenge you in the final world I still found it straightfoward. Fuck the ultra challenges, though, some of those are insane.
I haven't made it all the way through to the game, I've only gotten rabbid Mario, but it seemed pretty linear to me.There is leveling up and unlocking new abilities too.
Personally, I think it is a lot better than X-com. X-com with high penalties for death and the permadeath encourages you to play very risk averse and very slow. This was a huge problem and they applied a really crappy band-aid with round timers in X-com 2.
Mario v Rabbids just encourages you to go fucking nuts and they give you to the tools to do so.
It isn't just Mario+Rabbids on sale, it is the gold edition with the DLC. The DLC for this game is pretty big. You are getting 1.5 games for $26. At that price it is a no brainer.
