It's just as easy if you come from a country like France. There is a bias for certain non-English country like France and Germany. Also nobody start learning Japanese without learning English first. The same applies to people learning Russian, Arabic and so forth. It's always [your native language] + English + [that extra language]. The only exception I can think of are people coming from close Asian countries like Koreans who learn Japanese while still having a very weak English sometimes.

Spanish from Europe you'll be perfectly fine. Typically Western Europe is favoured way above the US, both professionally but also in the day to day life. Being American still has all those shitty cliché attached to it. I even noticed that with myself despite having a French accent, when people assume by default that you are "American" because they hear you speaking English then you tell them you're French and suddenly everything changes in the way they address you.

Spain doesn't have a bad reputation there either, maybe just below France and Germany. UK is pretty popular too, way more so than the US.

Well it all depends the field you want to work on. I worked for Square Enix (internationally but many business trips in Japan) and to even be CONSIDERED for a translator position, N1 is the bare minimum, literally the minimum. They have their own internal test afterwards which most candidates are failing because let's not kid ourselves; N1 means you have the language level of a 15 y/o Japanese teenager, it doesn't mean that you are fit to localize anything professionally.

Not everything has to be black or white. Even in the UK, OT are pretty common without crunching. In my dept everyone had 0.25~1.00 OT daily, that's just how it is when you are in a large international organization. Meetings with our US counterparts always starts at 5PM and overrun past 6PM. We leave the office more often around 6.30PM~ than 6PM. then you always have that one last question a colleague is asking, waiting for a document that was supposed to come at 5PM but arrives at 5.45PM and so on.

And because you have another team in California who need your delivery to go on with their day, then you have to do those extra 30~45 minutes a day just to meet expectations. But we're not crunching, it's just that work isn't evenly spread throughout the day. Welcome to just any other office in the world that collaborate with people in different timezones.

There's just no way around timezones when you work globally. I just wished our NA office was on the East Coast, would work way better for people in Europe. And OT weren't paid as we were on salary. So on paper you are still officially doing a 37.5 hours work week (the legal time in the UK) but you remain at the office 39~40 hours each week on average. I bet that Nintendo is no different seeing the operate between UK, Japan and US West Coast too.

The only compensation you get is that our directors (and me as manager) was pretty lenient with staff taking longer lunch break, if someone needs to leave the office in the middle of the day for an occasional appointment we would let them etc.
