I really want to like this game, and I've tried it twice, but I just can't get into it. After playing FFXI for two years around CoP, and WoW on and off since '05 the need to load between areas seems archaic, and the UI seems really non intuitive and not very user friendly. The combat seems really slow with the GCD, but I've been told it gets better.
I really like the character creator, though, and I've been a fan of Final Fantasy for forever.

tl;dr: What race/class/setup combo is best for a WoW player who plays DPS until familiar with all areas, and then mains a tank?

It does. I leveled mostly as a Bard, and it started off kind of boring but at the higher levels you have a number of abilities that are off the GCD and that reset cooldowns, so you have to stay pretty active.

That being said, Bard is a Archer/Bard is a fun DPS class and always pretty useful.

FFXIV Shadowbringers and WoW Classic both come out in the summer.

It does. Level 60 and beyond you'll rarely have a lull in combat unless you play Machinist which just dumps everything in a 10 second window and then sits there for a minute until everything comes back up again.

Well you actually have to do all the story quests for Heavensward and Stormblood before you are even allowed to access Shadowbringers content in the first place, so you might as well get it done sooner rather than having to play catch up for the first week or two once the expansion drops.

XIV's races are all broken fragments of a single original race though. They're all capable of breeding with each other, and they're referred to using 'human' as a general term.

raid gear is pointless in this game in comparison to crafted gear. best in slot is never needed unless you're FFLOGs leaderboarding, they undertune savage since Heavensward to be clearable with hq crafted gear, and most people glamour over raid gear anyways because it looks ugly.

However low FFXIV's story may get, even the endless fetch quests in ARR are more fulfilling than anything story related in BFA right now.
The high end gameplay is more fun than WoW right now too. The only thing WoW has over FFXIV in the gameplay department is giving players the majority of their class's basic kit at an earlier level while FFXIV's build up is way too slow now.

Offtank in Seriyu ex stays in tank stance most of the run. MT keeps telling them to switch into sword oath for more dps. Offtank responds “don’t worry about me”. Proceeds to keep provoking constantly and dragging the boss all over the place getting melee dps killed. We wipe at 12% hp and mt leaves as soon as we respawn.
