Are you sure you're not just experiencing input lag? I can't play for shit on my TV but in tabletop mode with some headphones I improve considerably.
Other than that it's just memorizing a few beat patterns and alternating them as you see fit.

I can pass songs (which isn't hard at all) but I'm stumbling through songs even on handheld mode with headphones, some songs I just can't catch the rhythm.

Just pay attention to the countdown at the beginning of each song and drum at that pace, if you get lost mid-song then just try to find the rhythm again by doing a Harlot (right, right, right, right)
Some songs are harder than others for sure, the ones with a slower tempo fuck me up the most since I want to drum faster and the game says "no"
Just keep trying user, you'll get the hang of it. Then you can even go for structure bonuses and get retarded high scores

I feel like I know what I've doing but I still find it hard, I'm just bad at rhythm games like Rhythm Tengoku fucks me up too.
